Thanksgiving has come and gone. I hope you had a lovely time, and I want to just say that I am very grateful for you, dearest Wordlers, and your continued visits to this column.
While Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, the day after is not. I will refrain from going on a Black Friday rant, however, as I’m aware that for many shoppers the good deals are thrilling and fun. There’s nothing wrong with that (though I find the entire notion of getting up super early to stand in line in the dark and cold outside of a Walmart rather hellish—at least now we can do a lot of Black Friday shopping online!)
It’s also 2XP Friday, but since it’s Black Friday I’ve decided to make it 3XP Friday, meaning you triple your winnings (or losses). How’s them apples?
Let’s do this Wordle!

Wordle Analysis

So close, yet so far. I almost had this in three, but I didn’t even think of the second option. SPOUT wasn’t a great opener, but once I tossed CRANE into the second guess I had just two words to choose from. I was so certain that it was only the one, CLOCK, that I was quite dismayed when the ‘L’ turned over grey. CHOCK for the win. I guess we can chalk that up to bad luck.
Trivia: The word Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is an ironically named phobia that describes a fear of long words. We have our hippos to thank for this one. And some unnamed and witty linguist who combined the word sesquipedalian (meaning “long word”) with “hippopotamus” and “monstrous” to come up with perhaps the most clever, and difficult to spell, phobia out there.
Competitive Wordle Score
Just like yesterday, I get 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot, who took three tries. C’est la vie.
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “hippo” comes from the Greek word “hippos” (ἵππος), meaning “horse.” It is a component of the term “hippopotamus”, which translates to “river horse” in Greek (“hippos” = horse, “potamos” = river). Over time, “hippo” became a shorthand reference to the hippopotamus in English.
