One Piece somehow managed to be a live action adaptation which fans actually loved, no small feat for one of the most popular mangas/animes of all time. The show is returning for season 2 on Netflix but there’s some good news and bad news on that front in terms of a release date.
The good news is that One Piece season 2 has finished filming/production and now moves into post-production. The bad news is that this still likely means a long wait until season 2 actually gets here, and we may be able to extrapolate its far-off release date as a result.
One Piece season 1 had a very long window between filming ending and release. A full year, in fact, August 22, 2022 to August 31, 2023 for the premiere. So if we’re doing another year here, that would be early February 2026. And that is 17 months after season 1.
However, that is on the low side of streaming era season gaps, so that’s great. Most shows are the full 18 months or two years on Netflix, and some are pushing three years like Stranger Things season 5 and Wednesday season 2. I’m especially impressed with this given all the huge practical sets and VFX work that One Piece needs. And if they have things down after season 1, it’s possible that post-production does not take a full year, and we get it even sooner. Again, for Netflix, for a show like this, that is pretty speedy.
Here is the official report on what will make it into One Piece season 2 after the events of its debut season:
“In One Piece co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer Matt Owens’ previous conversation with Tudum, he revealed that Dr. Kureha will definitely be part of Season 2. “When the Season 2 writers’ room got together, we knew how far we were going to get and that this character Dr. Kureha was going to be a big part of the season.”
“Owens is also eager to introduce viewers to some other fan favorites next season, especially since “Oda told everyone we’ll be meeting Chopper in Season 2.” The Straw Hats are also going to be in the Grand Line — “The place that we were talking about all of Season 1, we’re in it now,” said Owens.”
What’s unclear about One Piece on Netflix is just how far the series is going to go, given the practically unlimited source material that has still not reached its end. That will no doubt be a number of seasons going forward, but how many? Four? Six? Ten? Unclear, but I’m sure fans will tune in no matter what.
