Alarm bells should be going off for Agatha All Along fans right now. Good…alarm bells. The show may be sliding into one of those rare scenarios where despite originally being conceived as a miniseries, or at best, a lead-in to another show, it may in fact be getting a season 2, according to new evidence.

First, showrunner Jac Schaeffer did not flat-out deny a season 2 was coming in recent interviews, despite that apparently being the original plan. But now? It turns out that Agatha All Along is being submitted to the Emmys as a Comedy, not a Limited Series, a pretty strong indicator that uh, well, it’s not a limited series after all. This is the exact thing that happened with FX’s famed Shogun, originally a miniseries, but then submitted for Best Drama (which it won) and renewed for two additional season due to its success.

And Agatha is a success, both critically and with audiences, and grew in week-to-week viewership over time, a pretty rare feat in the streaming landscape (The Penguin has also been doing this over on HBO).

My theory is that it’s possible that Agatha was meant to lead into either a Wiccan series or just setting up Wiccan for Young Justice. But if the show wanted to continue on Billy and Agatha’s new hunt for Tommy, given that the first season essentially on a cliffhanger, it’s easy to imagine a season 2, even off of the Witches Road. They could even call it Agatha All Along: The Wiccan Chronicles or something random like that if they wanted to (please do not do the joke show name bit again).

The submission is not a guarantee. Disney may just believe that the series has a better shot at nominations or wins in the Comedy category instead of the Limited Series category, albeit it’s going to be up against the unstoppable The Bear, which remains bafflingly classified as a comedy. Some fans have wondered why Agatha is being called a comedy, but even if there is significant drama I mean, Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha was frequently hilarious. And if anyone is going to end up with an actor nomination for the show, it’s her. Last year, that award was won by Jean Smart for Hacks, and other nominees included Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building), Maya Rudolph (Loot) and Kristen Wiig (Palm Royale). I’d certainly consider Hahn’s Agatha performance worthy of that list.

But the main question is season 2. All the stars seem to be aligning for this to happen, and if so, I don’t see why Disney wouldn’t announce it soon. Hopefully that happens.
