A press release announcing the report explains, “First emerging as a cybersecurity threat in 2019, Kinsing targeted cloud native infrastructure, such as misconfigured APIs, but the threat actor quickly spread attacks across popular cloud native applications globally.”

The research highlights that Kinsing has evolved to weaponize new vulnerabilities within days of disclosure, suggesting a highly organized and skilled threat group with a profound understanding of security systems. This quick adaptation underscores the necessity for robust defense mechanisms in place to protect against such agile threats.

I spoke with Assaf Morag, security researcher at Aqua Security, about the Kinsing malware research. He explained how Aqua Security was able to graph the entire environment and understand the complete scope of Kinsing attacks. “We started analyzing the infrastructure and the applications and everything. The first thing we found was that we can actually query the download server and understand what kind of applications they attack.”

Aqua stresses that organizations should adopt a defense-in-depth strategy, ensuring multiple layers of security including real-time threat detection, rigorous patch management, and comprehensive system monitoring to mitigate these risks effectively.

In addition to the Kinsing research, Aqua Security recently announced a new integration with Orca Security. This collaboration is pivotal, especially considering recent market dynamics highlighted by the Wiz and Lacework spotlight.

Jairo Orea, global chief information security officer for Royal Caribbean Group, is quoted in the Aqua Security press release explaining, “My team and I did an exhaustive search to find the right cloud native solution to both identify and stop cloud native threats, and the Aqua and Orca combination was the only one that covered the use cases we needed to secure our cloud environment. We compared tools and ‘platforms’ from nearly a dozen vendors, but this was the only option that could help my team both manage and protect our cloud environments.”
