The summer movie bomb Borderlands—starring Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Hart—has completed its run in theaters, ending a disastrous few weeks on the big screen for the film adaptation of the blockbuster video game.

Directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands opened in theaters on August 9. The movie marked the first feature film adaptation of the Borderlands video game series, which kicked off in 2009.

In the movie, Blanchett stars as Lilith, a mysterious bounty hunter who reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora after she is hired by the powerful space baron Atlas (Edgar Ramírez) to find his missing daughter.

Lilith’s plans change, though, when she arrives on Pandora and teams with a rag-tag group of bandits she encounters to find a hidden vault on the planet that is said to contain immense amounts of treasure.

Among the group’s members are a mercenary (Hart), a scientist and archaeologist (Curtis), a pre-teen demolitionist (Ariana Greenblatt) and her bodyguard (Florian Munteanu), as well as a wisecracking robot named Claptrap (voice of Jack Black).

Per The Numbers, Borderlands earned $8.6 million in its first Friday-Sunday frame after opening in 3,125 North American theaters on August 9. The box office tracker reported that Borderlands’ last day in theaters was Thursday, September 5, when it grossed $3,682 from 178 screens domestically.

The Numbers reported that in total, Borderlands made $15.4 million in domestic ticket sales and nearly $15.5 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $30.9 million.

According to Variety, Borderlands—which was distributed by Lionsgate—had a production budget of $115 million and had a marketing and distribution budget of $30 million.

‘Borderlands’ Was Bombarded By Bad Reviews

Borderlands didn’t stand much of a chance with critics upon its release on August 9 in theaters.

Rotten Tomatoes critics gave the PG-13 release a 10% “rotten” rating based on 158 reviews. The Critics’ Consensus for the movie reads, “Glitching out in every department, Borderlands is balderdash.”

Borderlands’ Audience Score was a bit more favorable, however, earning a 53% “rotten” rating from RT users based on 500-plus verified ratings.

While Borderlands is no longer in theaters, viewers still have the option to purchase or rent the film on digital streaming via premium video on demand on such platforms as Prime Video, AppleTV+ and VUDU.

Borderlands debuted on PVOD on August 30.
