I have not paid all that much attention to Destiny 2’s Xur in well, ages at this point, as outside of very rare spiky stat exotics, he mainly serves as a catch-up mechanism for new or lapsed players.
But now he has something on offer that everyone wants, a new Skimmer, the “Xurfboard,” and it’s only the third vehicle of that type in the game. The first was given out through Destiny 2’s Guardian Games, and the second, Gjallarhorn-based one had to be bought in the store. Now, there’s the Xurfboard, which is expensive but thankfully, not real-money expensive.
The Xurboard is on offer for 97 Strange Coins, the currency you earn through activity completion in Destiny 2, and that is almost a full stack with the cap at 99. So that’s a lot of coins you’ll have to jam into a savings account.
You do not have to rush, however. Bungie is not pulling some sort of big FOMO, “you must crazily grind this weekend” move. From this point on Xur will always offer the Xurfboard every week, so you can save up over time for it. It is definitely better and more cool than the Guardian Games board, and the front end of it works with a number of different glow effects that a number of recent shaders have.
I’m a little surprised this is only the third Skimmer we’ve seen since the concept of the alternate vehicle debuted in March of 2024, but I guess the concept is still spooling up. It seems like one of those “wouldn’t it be cool if we could do this” things that Bungie sort of threw into the game, but now that it’s a hit, it will take more time to design others, whether you earn or buy them. But I’d expect them to start rolling out with more regularity now.
Skimmers essentially function the same as Sparrows, just a way to get from A to B, but the effect is cooler, turns are tighter and you can do snowboard-type tricks on it if you want. That’s worth the price of admission alone.
I know most frequent Destiny players already know about the Xurfboard’s existence, but if you had a stack of coins you forgot about and wanted to log in and grab it, now’s the time where it’s gone live.
