Artificial intelligence has ushered in remarkable progress—from personalized medicine to self-driving cars—but one of its darkest offspring is the rise of deepfakes. What started as a niche novelty quickly evolved into a powerful tool for deception, now capable of threatening governments, financial institutions, and individual privacy at scale.

The stakes are rising fast. According to recent projections, U.S. financial losses attributed to AI-generated fraud are expected to leap from $12.3 billion in 2023 to $40 billion by 2027. And real-world examples are becoming more brazen: in one case, fraudsters impersonated a company’s CFO on a video call using a deepfake, successfully convincing employees to transfer $25 million. In another, scammers used synthetic voices to trick family members into believing a loved one was in danger.

A Perfect Storm of Trust and Technology

At their core, deepfakes are hyper-realistic audio or video forgeries created using generative adversarial networks—machine learning models where two AIs compete to produce increasingly convincing synthetic content. The result is content that can fool not just the eye or the ear, but even the instincts of experienced professionals.

Deepfake threats are rapidly democratizing access to fraud, and the ability to mimic voices and faces across email, text, video, and calls means no one is immune.

“AI-powered fraud is no longer limited to high-value targets,” explained Joshua McKenty, co-founder and CEO of Polyguard. “Anyone with a cell phone or email address is a potential target.”

Where Current Defenses Fall Short

The cybersecurity industry is scrambling to respond, but many of today’s defenses are fundamentally reactive. They detect deepfakes after the content has been delivered, often with latency of 15 to 30 seconds—an eternity when fraud unfolds in real time.

Worse, some AI-based detection systems may help cybercriminals refine their deceptions. Khadem Badiyan, co-founder and CTO of Polyguard, emphasized, “The very idea of ‘using AI to fight AI’ is a bit of a nightmare, since these detection models can be weaponized to train generative adversarial networks (GANs), helping fraudsters create more convincing deepfakes and fueling an escalating arms race.”

Detection also tends to focus narrowly on audio, leaving video and messaging—critical components in multimodal attacks—largely unguarded. And even when deepfakes are flagged, there’s often no system in place to stop them from being acted upon.

Shifting from Reaction to Prevention

The path forward requires a fundamental shift: instead of simply identifying deepfakes after the fact, organizations need to prevent them from reaching users in the first place. That means integrating proactive safeguards into the communication channels themselves—blocking suspicious calls, verifying identities before interaction, and securing messaging platforms.

As McKenty noted, “No amount of trained hypervigilance can help employees spot next-generation fakes.” The pace of modern communication means people simply don’t have time to second-guess messages, especially when urgency is a core part of the attack.

Innovating Real-Time Defense

Badiyan stresses that collaboration is essential: “Technology providers must offer strong, privacy-preserving identity verification infrastructure that can be federated across platforms. Governments need to modernize regulatory frameworks to require real-time identity checks for high-risk communications, just as they did with KYC in finance. Businesses, meanwhile, need to treat identity as critical infrastructure—not a checkbox.”

Ethically, we must tread carefully. As McKenty points out, “Privacy and security aren’t in conflict, they’re prerequisites for each other.” Solutions must avoid surveillance overreach, centralized data collection, and opaque algorithms that could create new risks.

A Call to Proactive Vigilance

The deepfake dilemma is not going away. If anything, it’s accelerating. But the solution doesn’t lie in fear—it lies in foresight. Proactive technologies, responsible innovation, and informed collaboration can help us restore confidence in the authenticity of our digital world.

We can’t stop the rise of AI, nor should we. But we can—and must—ensure that truth still has a fighting chance.
