In an interesting move, Gundam will be coming to Season 4 of Call of Duty. However, it’s currently unclear in what capacity that may be.
In a bunch of new Tweets from the official Call of Duty and Gundam North America accounts, a shadow of Gundam is depicted against a building with the news that it will be coming to Season 4 of Call of Duty.
If I was to guess what this could be, it’s likely a new map that will feature one of the life-size Gundams. Something like a mockup of the Diver City mall in Odaiba with the old RX-78-2 Gundam outside it. The red Pegasus logo on the left is also a nice touch, which indicates again this will be probably tied to classic Gundam.
Obviously, it could be something else entirely, but due to the scale of mobile suits (around 18 meters or around 59 feet in height), I don’t see how you would be able to pilot one and retain Call of Duty’s core gameplay.
The latter point is something I actually have firsthand knowledge of, as I helped set up a collaboration between Shoji Kawamori and Call of Duty. With the resultant design being called the Ashura Reaper.
This was a new version of a Reaper, which in the Call of Duty universe is sometimes a type of human scale android built for combat.
The scaling is key here, as I doubt the Call of Duty would be willing to change how the game works to incorporate a massive mobile suit.
Again, I may be wrong but a new map seems like the most likely option.
Anyway, to see Gundam featured in a Call of Duty game is not something I would have thought possible ten years ago. So it’s clear that the Gundam franchise has come a long way in a pretty short period of time.
