Fortnite has begun teasing its upcoming, Doctor Doom-focused Marvel season, its second such Marvel seasonal theme. Now, we have an early look at the map with bits and pieces covered in green, Doom-based fog, which you can see above.
This comes in the wake of the official Doctor Doom trailer for the August 16 launch showing off a number of Marvel heroes, some new, some old. It features the likes of Jonesy Captain America, Peely Wolverine and Sabertooth Meowscles, which implies the battle pass is going to contain a number of Fortnite-based Marvel variants, rather than just all Marvel characters. Doom himself has already been introduced as a skin a while ago, but this should be new variation here.
I’m not sure if all of these are variants but I also spotted Emma Frost, Shuri Black Panther and there will be an X-Men ’97-style bundle sold of ‘90s Colossus, Cyclops and Jubilee. Gwenpool is here, War Machine is here, Mysterio, of all villains, is here. It’s a bit of a hodgepodge given how many Marvel skins have been introduced into the game over the years already, I believe it’s the most from a single IP by quite a wide margin. Much of this season was revealed at Disney’s D23 event, which took the opportunity to use it as a showcase.
Disney and Fortnite have significant connections between Marvel and Star Wars. Recently, Kevin Feige was said to have shown his team the Galactus world-eating event as inspiration for the character’s appearance in the Marvel universe. We know he will be played by frequent gaming voice actor Ralph Ineson, but in real life. Well, or CGI, probably, knowing the MCU. Some mocked Feige for using this as inspiration but I mean, it was a pretty cool event, and we have not seen any in-motion versions of Galactus in this kind of modern capacity. So I get it.
There will be a number of Marvel-themed weapons this time around, Captain America’s shield and a Doom blast among them. Usually one of these ends up breaking the game for some period of time.
It’s unclear if this Doom season was lined up with Disney’s recent reveal of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Given Disney’s relationship with Epic this seems a little too coincidental, and both that reveal and this season were planned some time ago. You may think they may not overlap but this is a game where Disney used an in-game Fortnite event to preview the very real arrival of Emperor Palpatine in the new Star Wars trilogy, which remains bizarre to this day. So we’ll see.
