Of all the shows that probably didn’t need a season 2, top of the list would be Squid Game, which took ten years for its creator to finally get it made. But as Netflix’s most popular show in history, this was inevitable. Now, Squid Game season 2 has a release date, and a new trailer to boot.

Squid Game season 2’s release date is December 26, 2024 where yes, it has in fact squeezed in before the end of 2024 as promised. Of course, that’s over three years since the first one was released, in what is probably one of the longest waits between seasons of a show I can remember. Netflix has got to get a handle on things like this, but it shows no signs of doing so.

The announcement of the release date at Netflix Geeked Week also comes with a new trailer, which you can see below:

In it, we see the hooded workers with PlayStation symbols on their faces setting up a new game, though we do not really see what the new events are going to be, which is not the biggest surprise. Seong Gi-hun is thrown back into it, and he’s confronted by the famed “black mask” from the first game. The end of the trailer shows that he has the same number from the first game.

Here is the official synopsis for season 2, along with a recap of its award and its new and old Korean cast members.

“Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the states and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who made history at the 74th Primetime Emmys® becoming the first Asian to win Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, once again helms the series as director, writer, and producer. Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo reprise their roles from Season 1 with an impeccable list of new cast members including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an rounding out the ensemble of colorful characters in the new season.”

My gut tells me that season 2 of Squid Game will have crazy high viewership, but probably not beat the first season, unlike say, Wednesday season 2 where I would expect that to rise higher than the first. It’s been three years, it’s not going to be the surprise viral phenomenon it was, though obviously, it will still net high viewership overall. We’ll find out December 26.
