The iOS 26.6 release candidate has just been seeded to developers, indicating that the new iPhone update will arrive next week. Apple’s iOS 26.6 is one of the last iPhone upgrades before iOS 27 arrives in September.

iOS 26.6 Could help Tackle iMessage Scams
One of the coolest changes coming iOS 26.6 is a new feature that will alert you when scammers are targeting your iMessage account. The new pop-up will include an alert when adversaries could be trying to harm your iPhone or compromise your privacy, according to MacRumors, which spotted a Tweet by X user @limpless_skelly.
According to the report, Apple will ask people to share the message to help the iPhone maker protect users from future attacks. When receiving a message, you can select “Not Now,” “Share With Apple,” and “Don’t Report”. Selecting Not Now could cause the pop-up to surface again at a later time.
It comes after iMessage has been targeted by zero-click spyware attacks —meaning you don’t even have to click the link for the malware to download onto your iPhone. Lockdown Mode protects high-risk users, while iMessage Contact Key Verification and spam message filtering add security. It seems the new iOS 26.6 feature is aimed at preventing scam messages that ask users to actively respond, such as tricking them into paying money into attackers’ accounts.
Jake Moore global cybersecurity advisor at ESET sees the iOS 26.6 feature as “another sign that mobile operating systems are becoming far more proactive, rather than waiting for users to spot scams themselves.”
“As iMessages are encrypted, Apple will be able to use its software locally on the device to analyse the message and determine if it’s malicious or not, but it could stop some of the most sophisticated phishing attacks before they begin — in theory,” he says. “As long as the security warning doesn’t turn into notification fatigue, then this could be a positive move forward.”
However, if this is successful, criminals are likely to move to WhatsApp and even AI voice calls to target new victims, Moore warns.
Apple’s iOS 26.6 Security Updates And Bug Fixes
Apple’s iOS 26 also includes an update to blocked contacts and some tweaks that will help pave the way for AI powered Siri in iOS 27. When it arrives next week, the iOS 26.6 upgrade should also come with a bunch of security patches and bug fixes.
