While all eyes are on The Final Shape, Destiny 2’s conclusory “Light and Darkness” expansion, Bungie has at least given us enough information to know they are not doing something drastic like stopping development on the game, recent problems or not.

We are being herded into a new non-seasonal format that is still…somewhat seasonal, but with three not four of them and longer, more substantive stretches of content. But at this point, there have been enough story hints about where things are going that I think we know the focus, or at least part of the focus, on what’s been announced already.

Echoes, Vex Episode – This one may be the most fuzzy, but as of this week, I think we got some strong hints that it will have to do with the Vex research team at the Ishtar Collective. We just saw the Ishtar symbol inside the Black Garden, where we know copies of the original team have been exploring. And there are hints other copies in there have previously made contact with the missing Vault of Glass fireteam Warlock, Praedyth. Also, after the explanation of Maya Sundaresh’s Veil research, my theory is that she lives on after death, and may show up as a Vex-infused antagonist, given that we have never really truly gotten a “face” from that race we can hate. Asher Mir may show up as well.

Revenant, Scorn Episode – Again, we have gotten hints about this in past seasons, and now a whole lot this season specifically. We know that there is a faction of Scorn loyalists who are working for Fikrul, specifically outside the plans of The Witness, even though it has been known to use Scorn in its armies itself. The Warlord’s Ruin dungeon discusses Fikrul at length, and the implication is that the Scorn there are from House of Kings, who are intimately tied with Uldren in Crow’s past life. We have killed Fikrul many times but he is effectively immortal, and it seems fairly obvious he will be the focus of this episode here as the only real Scorn figure who continues to lurk and scheme in the background.

Heresy, Hive Episode – Here, again, it seems pretty clear which Hive we are ready to focus on. We know that Savathun has been resurrected and is now off doing…something as we keep her ghost hostage. And the events of Season of the Witch had Eris using her Hive god power to cut Xivu Arath off from her Throne World, making her mortal and able to be hunted and killed. In theory. The one caveat here is that it’s hard to imagine Savathun not involved in The Final Shape in some significant way, and I could see something like The Witness transporting Xivu Arath through the Traveler Portal to act as some last line of defense, maybe as the campaign boss. But we just don’t know, and my money is on both sisters featuring heavily in this episode.

Those are my theories based on what I think is pretty solid evidence over the course of the past year. Let me know what you think.
