It’s taken a good while, but both Macross Plus and Macross Zero are finally getting proper international Blu-ray releases in the near future.

Macross Plus is an amazing anime from the mid 90s that featured the talents of director Shinichiro Watanabe and composer Yoko Kanno, along with story, mecha design and direction from Shoji Kawamori.

It’s set a few decades after the original Macross TV series and deals with the competition to replace UN Spacy’s next mainstay variable fighter.

The animation in this series is also astounding for the time and still holds up incredibly well today.

So this new Ultimate Edition release of Macross Plus on Blu-ray is long overdue. Featuring a book with art and interviews, a poster and art cards, it’s inline with the excellent Japanese Blu-ray release from a while ago. This Ultimate Edition will also include both the OVA and movie edition.

By contrast, Macross Zero is a much newer instalment but actually acts as a prequel to the original Macross TV series. It covers the latter stages of the Unification Wars and the discovery of strange new alien technology.

While Macross Plus saw an international release back in the 90s, this marks the first time Macross Zero will come Westward.
