We’re currently in the pre-order period for the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, following their eagerly awaited launch at last week’s Galaxy Unpacked. The first phones should reach consumers by the end of this month, but if anyone is looking for something extra special, they might want to wait.

There has been discussion and chatter about additional Galaxy Z Fold6 models for some months. The latest details on another Z Fold6 come from the team at GalaxyClub. They are reporting on a new test firmware recently shared on Samsung’s servers. The firmware targets a Samsung device with the model number SM-F958N.

The new firmware points to Samsung’s continued development of at least one more Galaxy Z Fold6 variant. Given the chatter has picked out the potential for both a high-end model of the Fold6 with an improved camera and increased storage, and a cheaper model which removes S-Pen support and cuts down on the internal storage and processor speed,

The other point to note in these discussions is the potential for these variants to be limited to a handful of territories, perhaps available only in Samsung’s home country of South Korea.

It’s also unlikely that these potential handsets are “ready to go” so the devices could reach the public in the near future. If that was the case, they would have debuted alongside the main model at Unpacked. It’s more likely that a tweaked Z Fold6, be it a premium “Ultra” or a lower-specced “Fan Edition” model—assuming Samsung decides to go ahead with a release—will show up late in 2024.

That date would give Samsung time to establish the Z Fold6 in the market, and put enough distance between its release and the launch of foldable so sales of the former would not be cannibalized.

It would also mean Samsung would refresh the cutting-edge foldable handset not long after the launch of Apple’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models scheduled for September. With the current Z Fold6 the first big hitter of the second half of the year, there’s a certain synchronicity that a variant of the Z Fold6 could be the last big hitter as well.
