A new episode of Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building lands this evening and before it does, I wanted to put forth my own theory before we find out what happens tonight. I meant to post this last week, but it’s been crazy busy! I’m following over a half a dozen shows even after Rings Of Power, Bad Monkey and Slow Horses all wrapped up their respective seasons. You’ll just have to cut me a little slack.

In any case, last week our heroes, intrepid podcasting sleuths Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) all headed to the house of Charles’s sister, Doreen (Melissa McCarthy). Doreen is quite the character. She makes Oliver one of the worst cocktails I’ve ever heard described, flirts with him nonstop and terrifies everyone with her collection of creepy dolls. Could Doreen be the killer?

I doubt it. That’s too much of a stretch. Mostly, Doreen serves as a bit of comic relief and ultimately helps Oliver and his lady love, Loretta (Meryl Streep) come together in spite o Doreen’s own jealousy and Oliver very nearly ruining everything with his insecurities.

It’s the three celebrity actors—Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy and Zach Galifianakis all playing outlandish versions of themselves—who end up doing most of the detective work, along with Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton).

They come up with plot holes from Season 1, which is a nice way to connect the two seasons, including:

  • Who poisoned Winnie (the dog)? It wasn’t Sting . . . so who was it?
  • The actors point out it wasn’t Jan either, directing them to the note on the door that says “End the podcast or I will end you.” It’s written by a left-handed person, and Jan is not left-handed. (Who is, I wonder?)
  • The note on Jan’s door says “I’m watching you” just like the text messages our heroes receive.
  • Charles realizes that Sazz (Jane Lynch) was figuring out all of this on her own before she died.

After all these revelations, Howard reveals that the Westies have been cashing Dudenoff’s check. Howard calls the number for Dudenoff and when Vince answer, Howard gasps. We see Vince turn to his fellow Westies and say, rather ominously, “They know.”

This is a red herring. There’s no way the Westies killed Sazz or Dudenoff. I think it’s far more likely that he died of natural causes and the Westies covered it up so that they could A) keep paying cheap rent and B) cash those checks. It’s a crime, but it’s not murder. Sazz being burned up in the incinerator is just bad luck for the Westies and their scheme. The show is sending us—and our heroes—on a wild goose chase. The Westies have nothing to do with whoever is trying to kill—or at least frighten—our podcasters.

But who could that be? I admit, I’m still no closer to solving the mystery than I was last week. Sting perhaps. I think he’s left-handed, and he does have a famous song about watching people. What are your theories?
