January 1 update below. This post was first published on December 31, 2023.

Samsung’s next flagship phone is thought to launch in early 2024, but it was just listed on Walmart. Was this an accident? One can never know for sure, but it looks like it, not least because it has now been taken down, though not before several sources captured the details. Here’s what we’ve learned.

Picked up by X poster @app_settings and wccftech.com, Walmart’s listing related to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus.

Similar Design, Different Display

The design, claiming to show the phone in Onyx Black finish. The image, looks similar to the Galaxy S23 Plus from the rear. Nonetheless, there are noticeable differences. If the details on the now-vanished ad are correct, it seems the display size on the next model will be bigger than the current one, rising from 6.6 inches to 6.7 inches. Internal changes are also afoot, the listing suggests. The specs also mention that you’ll be able to “See it all in stunning detail on the bigger and brighter screens of Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus. Which tells us that the regular S24 screen is going to be bigger than the S23 and that both will have greater brightness.

More Memory For More Powerful Features

RAM onboard the S23 Plus is 8GB, while the next model will lift this significantly to 12GB, which is a first. It looks like this uptick is part of the predicted inclusion of generative AI features, and some of the practical benefits of these are mentioned.

The first of these is, “Live Translate—Speak foreign languages on the spot, right from inside the Samsung Phone app, with Live Translate.”

Then there’s something called Generative Edit, which promises to move or remove objects in photos, which can also fill in empty spaces in photos. Note that this requires an internet connection, suggesting that the most advanced features could be achieved online rather than on-device.

Other photographic capabilities mentioned in the ad are nightography zoom, which promises to “bring your night into the light,” and high resolution, which specifically says, “Share more of life’s most share worthy moments in natural, true to life color with 50MP camera.” That’s the same pixel count as the last camera, by the way.

We’ll find out full details in due course, but for now, again assuming the details are accurate, it looks like Samsung is working on a new phone that looks similar to the current one, though with a bigger, brighter display, and with upgrades designed to improve performance, and make next-gen features possible.

Though this listing has now vanished from Walmart, more leaks and reports are likely before the expected release date of the S24 series in January, 2024.

January 1 update. It turns out that the S24 Plus wasn’t the only Samsung previewed by Walmart. Another page, since deleted, mentioned the top-of-the-range Galaxy S24 Ultra and was spotted in a post on X by @BennettBuhner.

The listing pictured the phone in a color called Titanium Black, and is described as “the most epic Galaxy yet.”

The listing confirms there’s an S Pen in the phone, which was expected, of course. It also describes the phone as having a 6.8-inch display, the same as on the S23 Ultra. The ad described the display as brighter and flatter than the S23 Ultra screen.

Like the S24 Plus details, the RAM here is said to be 12GB, so the photographic trickery mentioned above seem sure to be supported on the Ultra as well and certainly the listing mentions Generative Edit and Nightography Zoom, as well as Live Translate, as with the S24 Plus ad.

Also matching the specs of the S23 Ultra is the camera here, according to Walmart, which has a 200MP resolution. Storage is listed at 256GB, though there will doubtless be bigger storage capacities available, too.

Intriguingly, the weight of the S24 Ultra is slightly less than the S23 Ultra, if these details are correct. Instead of 8.25 ounces, the new phone will be a shade lighter, at 8.22 ounces. And the dimensions are also slightly different, 6.39 x 3.11 x 0.34 inches, making it slightly less tall, wider and thinner than last year’s model.

Will there be more details leaked before the expected January launch? Please check back.
