In the run-up to Samsung’s summer launch event, a third device was rumoured to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6. It never appeared during July’s Galaxy Unpacked event. Yet, before the end of October, the mysterious third foldable is set to arrive.

Details on Samsung’s next Galaxy Z come from the industry publication FNNews. The presumptively named Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is expected to launch on October 25th.

As per the discussions over the summer, the stand-out feature of the Z Fold SE will be its dimensions. It is a reported 10.6mm when closed and 4.9mm when opened. That compares to the 12.1mm opened and 5.6,, closed dimensions of the Galaxy Z Fold6

Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold is slightly thinner when closed, at 10.5, but slightly thicker when opened, at 5.1mm. Given the assumption that most of the work on a foldable device is conducted when opened, the Z Fold SE will have the advantage over the Google handset.

It’s an impressive win over Google, but even this Special Editon can’t take on the Honor Magic V3 and win. That foldable stunned the market when it was launched in July. Closed, it is 9.2mm, open 4.4mm.

Nevertheless, this will be Samsung’s thinnest foldable form factor in the current market and I; ‘ve no doubt it will lean heavily into the fashionable elements of this special edition (at the same time as many of Apple’s dedicated community will talk about appropriating the iPhone SE moniker).

Samsung will be hoping that this new model will bring consumers to its foldable devices. According to Counterpoint Research, during Q1 2024 Samsung lost its lead in foldable market share to Huawei. With an international launch of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, it has the opportunity to do so in the holiday quarter.
