Looking for Friday’s Wordle hints, clues and answer? You can find them here:

The second weekend of October is upon us, and just 20 days remain before Halloween. What are you dressing up as this year? Or have you put childish things away, and spend Halloween in your normal apparel? There’s no wrong answers, just better answers, to this question.

Sometimes I dress up in multiple different costumes over the course of the weekend (if it’s on a weekend) because I’m so bad at making up my mind. The last couple of years, however—well, probably since COVID put a damper on all celebrations—I’ve stuck to just one.

Since it’s the weekend, I must point you to my weekend streaming guide. There’s actually a ton of new stuff out, and some of it looks quite excellent. Let me know if you’ve been watching any good movies or TV shows lately, or if you’ve read any good books. I also just reviewed Lev Grossman’s new Arthurian novel, The Bright Sword, so if you’re looking for a great new read, check out my review.

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

I don’t feel particularly great about my guessing game today. CHOIR was actually decent, with one green box and just 75 remaining words. But then I panicked and thought I should rule out as many vowels as possible for some reason, and chose ADIEU next. This left me with a pretty unmanageable 17 remaining possible solutions, which I cut down to just 2 with SNAIL. Thankfully, I guessed the correct word on my fourth try: STAIN for the win!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 0 points for guessing in four, and as I feared Wordle Bot guessed in three, so I lose 1 point for that. Lame.

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “stain” comes from Old Norse steina, meaning “to paint or color.” It traces back to steinn, meaning “stone,” since stones were often used to mark or dye materials. It entered English through Old French in the 14th century.
