Looking for Wednesday’s Wordle hints, clues and answer? You can find them here:

Not only is it the last day of the month, it’s Halloween. Happy Halloween you marvelous Wordlers! I hope you’re doing something fun. I’m dressing up as The Dude from The Big Lebowski. I’ll probably just sit around and hand out candy and drink coffee by the fire. That sounds pretty nice. The kids will be occupied with their friends and whatever shenanigans they get up to. My daughter is 17 this year, and a senior in high school, so this is kind of a major Halloween for us—theoretically her last one before leaving the nest. Gulp.

Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday and this was the riddle I gave you:

I can start a war or end one. I can give you the strength of heroes or leave you powerless. I might be snared with a glance, but no force can compel me to stay. What am I?

Kudos to those of you who solved it. The answer is love.

Let’s solve this Wordle!

Can you solve today’s phrase?

SHALE ended up being a lousy opening guess today despite being a pretty good one normally. One yellow box and (I would learn later) 405 remaining solutions! Ouch! I went with TRIED for my second guess, and this was absolutely as close to perfect as you could get without guessing the Wordle. Only one possible word remained: WEIRD for the win! Huzzah!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and another for beating the Wordle Bot, who took four tries today. 2 points for me! Suck on that, Wordle Bot! Ha! I’m the king of the world!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

Today’s etymology in the form of a Halloween rhyme:

In times of old, in stories feared,

A word arose, the ancient weird.

From Old English wyrd, a fated thread,

The power to shape what lies ahead.

Three sisters spun, in myth and lore,

The Fates, the Norns, of ancient yore.

They wove strange paths, unseen, unclear,

And from their craft, weird the seer.

Once fate-bound, destined, threads entwined,

But Shakespeare’s witches redefined—

The word grew eerie, strange, and dark,

A haunting chill, a spectral mark.

So now on nights of ghouls and ghosts,

We say “how weird,” and raise a toast,

To shadows strange, and tales untold,

The odd, bizarre and weird unfold.
