We’re still in the middle of autumn, but it sure feels like winter outside. There’s snow on the ground here in the mountains, and temperatures are barely topping freezing. It makes me want to huddle inside with a hot cup of coffee and do nothing at all.

I just sort of searched my mind for a starting word today. I have some that I gravitate to like SPATE / SPORE / CRATE / PEARL and the like, and I wanted to use something else and eventually went with PRIDE. Thank goodness, it was very nearly perfect. I came up with just three words to choose from for my second guess: READY, REEDY and NERDY. I figured I’d pick one that would at least eliminate the ‘R’ in the first box and, as per my usual best practices, went with the option that had the most letter variety. That all went swimmingly, as READY was the Wordle! Huzzah!
Competitive Wordle Score
This is my first hole-in-two in a hot minute. This means I get 2 points for guessing in two and 1 point for beating the Bot who took three tries today. That’s 3 points x2 for 2XP Friday = 6 points! Holy smokes! I’m the king of the Wordle!
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “ready” originates from Old English rǣde, meaning “prepared” or “arranged,” which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic raidijaz (also meaning “arranged” or “prepared”). This word is related to Old Frisian rēde, Middle Dutch gereet, and Old High German reiti. It ultimately traces back to the Proto-Indo-European root reidh-, which means “to ride” or “to make ready,” suggesting a sense of preparation for movement or action. Over time, “ready” evolved to mean being fully prepared or in a state to act.
