Here we are, the first weekend of January and it’s finally starting to feel like winter. A chill has descended, though it’s still unseasonably warm. That’s alright. Well this didn’t go so well—certainly not as well as my guessing game yesterday! LOUSE wasn’t entirely lousy, just not great, either. BLEAT slashed the 121 remaining words down to just 12. Unfortunately, my next guess—REGAL—left me with two remaining solutions: RELAY and RELAX. I chose poorly.

How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word relax comes from the Latin relaxare, which means “to loosen, open, stretch out, or widen again.” This is derived from re- (meaning “again” or “back”) and laxare (meaning “to loosen”), which in turn comes from laxus (meaning “loose” or “slack”). The term entered Old French as relascer and later Middle English as relaxen, retaining the meaning of easing or loosening tension.
This makes me want to name a character Laxus Maximus, which reminds me of the Asterix and Obelisk comics.
