Europe has seen a major influx of Chinese car brands over the last few years, particularly in the EV market. But while BYD is the only one to make it into the top 10 so far, another automaker from China is quietly positioning itself for European importance, and potentially even global dominance. At the XPENG L03 launch in Munich, the company showed off its latest design and technology capabilities, and they tick a lot of boxes consumers want – with one potentially huge advantage.

XPENG L03: Designed For The Global Market

Like most Chinese automakers, XPENG has only brought a subset of its vehicles to the European market, starting with the P5 and then the P7 and G9. The G6 followed, and this was the first car to be launched in the UK. However, the L03 is a bit different to all of these, which started off in the Chinese market first. In contrast, the LO3 is being launched simultaneously in 65 markets, and although I saw a preview of it first in Beijing in April, it has been specifically designed to meet the differing needs of countries worldwide.

“Our philosophy for the global market is local for local,” says Jacky Gu, ATC Chairman & E-powertrain Vice President at XPENG. “But our product is still a platform design, so we carry over a lot of the fundamental solution for China market into the global market. The L03 design is based on our SEPA 3.0 architecture. This architecture is designed to meet the requirements of multiple areas, not only China. For L03 we did tuning and calibration for the European market.”

Part of this is the introduction of a range extender (REEV) variant. Although XPENG did launch an REEV option for the G6 in China in March, the L03 is the company’s first model to offer this technology, which it calls Kunpeng, internationally. The L03 will come in four powertrain variants initially. The base Standard Range model will combine a 58.3kWh battery with a rear-wheel drive motor delivering 180kW (241hp), while the Long Range offers a 71.2kWh battery. The AWD Performance version provides dual motors delivering 285kW (382hp). The REEV still has a sizeable 37.5kWh battery but also includes a 1.5-liter internal combustion engine.

“We started with BEV technology,” says Gu. “Then, 5 years ago, we were doing a marketing study to evaluate the design for a new solution for PHEV.” Although PHEVs, EREVS and HEVs started to see considerable growth at the beginning of 2024 in China, leading to renewed interest from automakers, BEVs still dominate Chinese New Energy Vehicle sales. “In the Chinese market, electric vehicle growth has been significant, firstly because of Chinese local government policy, but also some subsidy in the beginning, and then rapid infrastructure growth. There are a lot of charging stations, the power grid is stable, and electricity is cheap.”

However, these conditions vary greatly outside China. Even in Europe, charging infrastructure can be patchy and electricity fees expensive, leading to a wide range of BEV adoption levels. Outside of Europe, the situation is even more variable, so a car aimed at an international market can’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to powertrain technology. “All those factors will impact our global production strategy,” says Gu. “We started our BEV business in Europe several years ago. Our G6 and G9 have grown well, but in Europe there is still a large market for hybrids – PHEV, range extender or HEV. That’s why several years ago we thought that if we wanted to explore the new marketing business opportunities the range extender is the natural solution to carry over from BEV because a lot of technology can be reused for this solution. The range extender can also meet the global market requirement.”

XPENG L03 EREV: Temporary Solution Or Long-Term Option?

The L03 EREV is a serial hybrid, like Nissan’s ePower system, which means that the wheels are always driven by an electric motor and the fossil fuel engine only ever acts as a generator. The driving experience will be almost identical to a BEV, so you’ll barely know the difference. XPENG claims that you can hardly hear the engine kick in, with just 1dB of additional noise. The EREV battery was deliberately chosen to be large enough to cover most daily transport needs, delivering 134 miles of WLTP range, like many BEV city cars. With another 490 miles available from the combustion engine, the EREV is designed to completely banish range anxiety in countries that have poor charging infrastructure and/or expensive public charge pricing.

Whether the EREV is just a stopgap until BEV adoption picks up, or something longer term, will depend on the development of the market and is likely to vary by country. “BEV is our most important destination, the solution for the future,” says Gu. “But whether EREV’s are a transition solution or the final one, I cannot give you this answer now because EREVs still have a long lifecycle. Globally, a lot of countries have great infrastructure, but in some it’s much worse. While they are building, the investment will take a much longer time. In some areas, their gas prices are lower than the electricity cost. So they could take more than 15 years to build their grid infrastructure. In China, BEVs may dominate the market, but in other global markets maybe the reverse or half-half.”

XPENG is planning to offer its EREV across Europe, although availability will vary by country. “Maybe Norway likes BEV more, but other countries in southern Europe, such as Spain, may like the range extender. In the Middle East, or South of Asia, a lot of countries will like the range extender.” At the launch, XPENG only announced EREV availability in Germany, Belgium, Sweden, and Austria, not France, the Netherlands, Norway, or Denmark, which will only get the BEV initially.

Charging Ahead With The XPENG L03

However, one country that isn’t part of the strategy for either BEV or EREV, for now at least, is America. “In North American countries, both Canada and the USA, government policy is dynamic,” says Gu. “It’s a challenge for manufacturers, because the automotive business is a huge investment. If the policy is dynamic, it’s not good for anyone, not just for automotive. We will try to do some preparation, but I think for the business stuff we’ll see. We have a plan for Mexico, maybe next year.”

Charging has been an area where XPENG has been a leader, with its G6 recently setting a 1,000km EV record thanks to its fast 451kW DC charger (despite only a 400kW device being available during the record attempt). However, while the G6 uses an 800V architecture to achieve this, the L03 is only 400V and so only offers 193kW charging with the Standard Range and 236kW for the Long Range or AWD Performance BEVs. That still enables a 20-minute top-up from 10-80%. The base range of the cars is relatively mediocre, too, with 278 miles for the Standard Range, 325 miles for the Long Range, and just 275 miles for the AWD Performance (all in the WLTP cycle). That will be fine for longer distances, but not in the same league as the BMW iX3 or Volvo EX60 P12.

Nevertheless, Gu reckons that pushing charging speed much higher will provide diminishing returns for customers. “In the next few years, the value proposition of charging is not as high as before, because 3C and 5C is already top level, and in the next two years we will upgrade to 10C,” he says. A 3C charging rate means 0-100% in 20 minutes, 5C means 12 minutes, and 10C means 6 minutes. The latter would require megawatt chargers, which XPENG’s own charging network is starting to offer. “In China, other players are designing 12C or even higher. You reduce charging times by one minute, but you must do a lot to achieve that. 10C should be fine.”

XPENG L03 Secret Weapon: Urban Self-Driving

So far, the L03 might not be coming across as anything too innovative compared to other BEVs and PHEVs coming out of China. The design may be physically attractive, and despite the sloping coupe rear, there’s plenty of passenger space. You get 539 liters of rear luggage capacity, and 1,640 liters with the rear seats down, which is competitive in this class of vehicle. Then there’s a 102-liter frunk (although this isn’t available in the EREV and drops to 69 liters in the AWD Performance). You can even tow up to 1,500kg braked, and there’s a 10-liter drawer under the rear seats for good measure, plus a range of internal storage accessories as well as a roof rack.

None of this is revolutionary, however. The unique feature will be how the L03 is going act as an introduction to a capability that XPENG has been offering in China since March 2026 – its VLA 2.0 Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP) system. Like Tesla’s FSD, this can drive around cities and highways without user intervention. I’ve used VLA 2.0 NGP in Beijing and was thoroughly impressed by its capabilities. Over 45 minutes of busy city driving, I had to make zero user interventions.

This is part of what XPENG is now claiming it’s all about as a company: physical AI. Self-driving cars are only part of the plan, which also includes flying cars and (of course) a humanoid robot, in this case called IRON. “When I joined XPENG in 2021, I was a powertrain guy, but what excited me was NGP,” says Gu. “I tested NGP mode for almost 50 kilometers. It was already an amazing design back then. This is the future, and the reason I joined XPENG.”

You will need to buy the Ultra trim level of the L03 to get NGP capability. This includes three of XPENG’s Turing chips delivering 2,050 TOPS of processing power (the basic cars have just 750 TOPS, although even this is above most current vehicles). While the launch included a video of XPENG CEO and founder He Xiaopeng being driven around Munich by NGP, it’s still awaiting regulatory approval in Europe, which is likely to mean waiting until at least 2027.

However, XPENG is also the first Chinese company to feature Google Maps Auto SDK integration, which will mean the LO3’s built-in mapping will be come from an industry-standard Western brand. This should accelerate the rollout of self-driving capabilities as the car will be on a level playing field in this respect with non-Chinese automakers. VLA 2.0 is a visual system that doesn’t rely on maps first, either. It can navigate unmapped areas and in my experience responds well to the behavior of other road users. XPENG talked a lot about training VLA 2.0 for Europe based on the cultural driving habits of specific countries. XPENG is also banking on the UN’s DCAS Regulation 171 Series 2, which is intended to standardize urban assisted driving functions.

The significance of the XPENG L03 is currently more in the future, but it could be influential. In China, VLA 2.0 NGP is proving to be a strong selling point for XPENG’s cars, with its more premium P7 being purchased by people attracted by the autonomous function who then use it for over half their journeys. XPENG has also announced a keen price for the L03 starting at under €35,600 ($41,000) in Germany for the Standard Range BEV, €38,600 ($44,000) for the EREV or Long Range, and the AWD Performance will be €41,600 ($45,000). However, the most significant price is that the Ultra (based on the AWD Performance) will come in at €46,600 ($50,000). This compares favorably with Tesla’s Model Y. If XPENG’s timeline for VLA 2.0 in Europe rings true, the L03 could be very competitively priced for a full self-driving car with urban capabilities. This will pose a major challenge to traditional automakers that are still looking at years before they can offer this function.
