5 Dead Via Vibrio Vulnificus

When you hear the words “flesh-eating,” it’s usually not good—regardless of what words follow whether it’s a flesh-eating friend, flesh-eating fruitcake or something else. Therefore, it’s a good idea to pay attention to any news about anything known as “flesh-eating” bacteria such as Vibrio vulnificus.

Well, the Louisiana Department of Health just provided on Thursday some “breaking” news about Vibrio vulnificus—namely that there’s been an outbreak of Vibrio vulnificus infections in 2026. We’re only about halfway through this year and there have already been nine cases of such infections in Louisiana—resulting in plenty of badness, nine hospitalizations and five deaths. That’s a significant increase over the average of seven cases and one death per year there over the past decade. And any time you see more cases of an infectious disease than expected, it’s considered an outbreak.

Vibrio Vulnificus Is One Type Of Flesh-Eating Bacteria

Vibrio vulnificus is known as a flesh-eating bacteria because it is one of the various species of bacteria that can cause necrotizing fasciitis with the mot common bacterial cause being Group A Streptococcus. To understand what this very serious, life threatening condition is, let’s look at the two words “necrotizing” and “fasciitis.” The first refers to the death of living body tissue. So a necrotizing date, for example, would be one so bad that it cause your pieces of your body to die. The second is a combination of the word “fascia,” which refers to a thin and extensive layer of connective tissue that sits just under your skin, and the suffix “-itis,” which stands for inflammation.

Vibrio Vulnificus Can Cause Necrotizing Fasciitis

Taken together then, necrotizing fasciitis refers to a severe bacterial infection that causes the death of this fascia and the flesh that lies above it—hence the “flesh-eating” moniker. It can occur when such “flesh-eating” bacteria enters your body through some kind of break in your skin—which can be as minor as a scrape or an insect bite. This would be a very bad break indeed since such bacteria can then quickly get under your skin, both figuratively and literally, reaching your fascial layer.

There the bacteria can spread like wildfire. But the real toxic thing about this bacteria is that they then release toxins that can then keep blood from flowing into the area. Without oxygen-carrying blood, the tissue in the area basically dies. Such toxicity can spread too. The toxins can travel to other parts of your body, like major organs, wreaking havoc in the progress.

This interference of blood flow to your body tissues is essentially analogous to cutting off the major highways to a location. It not only prevents oxygen from getting there. It also does the same for different immune cells and antibiotics. Therefore, typically the only recourse is emergency surgery—cutting away the dead tissue to stop the spread of the infection. It can be a very gory race against the bacteria—repeatedly cutting off different affected parts of your body like your limbs. Otherwise, the infection can just keep spreading, eventually leading to sepsis, shock, multiple organ failure and death.

Vibrio vulnificus Lives In Warm Coastal Waters

If that sounds horrible, it’s because it is. Fortunately, necrotizing fasciitis is not a super common condition. But the risk of necrotizing fasciitis can increase when the presence of flesh-eating bacteria such as Vibrio vulnificus increases.

Normally, you can find Vibrio vulnificus in warm coastal brackish or salt water between the months of May and October. As a result, the bacteria can be very shellfish too, being found in shellfish inhabiting those water. Therefore, entering such waters with any kind of break in your skin could put you at risk for getting infected. So could eating raw or undercooked shellfish from such waters— particularly oysters—or rubbing such shellfish on your open wounds for whatever reason.

Symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis like a fever, chills, body aches, nausea, diarrhea or pain in the infected area tend to start within 24 hours of the Vibrio vulnificus entering your body. As you can see, these can be easily mistaken for the flu. Within hours to days, though. you may start seeing more characteristic stuff like discolored and unusually warm skin, swelling of the area, worsening pain and fever and blisters filled with bloody or yellowish fluid. Your blood pressure may also drop, resulting in dizziness and light-headedness. These are symptoms that you shouldn’t just try to walk off or use some wellness woo like coffee enemas to treat. Instead, seek care from a real medical doctor as soon as possible.

Climate Change May Be Leading To More And More Vibrio Vulnificus Cases

Louisiana isn’t the only state to see Vibrio vulnificus cases this year. Florida has already had two deaths from this flesh-eating bacteria. And the Maryland Department of Health has had 29 confirmed and 114 probable cases of Vibrio vulnificus so far. In fact a FOX45 piece by Rebecca Pryor quoted the president of the Maryland State Medical Society Eric Wargotz, MD, as saying, “Cases have gone up steadily over the past decade. As the water is warm, these potential pathogens grow and become in higher concentration and can cause more illness and possibly death.”

In other words, continuing climate change may lead to more and more of these “flesh” mobs in coming years. A 2024 publication in the scientific journal PLOS Pathogens called Vibrio vulnificus a “quintessential climate-sensitive organism.” The publication described how climate change is making ocean water in many parts of the world warmer and thus increasing the number of locations where Vibrio vulnificus can grow and thus where such flesh-eating bacteria infections can occur.

So it does pay to pay attention to what’s happening with flesh-eating bacteria like Vibrio vulnificus. Not only can it help you prevent things from happening in the flesh, it can also serve as a bellwether to what’s happening to our weather and overall climate.
