AT&T Unveils Unlimited Day Pass For iPad Users — On All Carriers

A new launch from AT&T is aimed at iPad users only, but it doesn’t matter if you aren’t an AT&T customer. Here are the details and what makes it interesting.

The new offer is called the Unlimited Day Pass, AT&T announced, and costs $3. For this, you get unlimited data for 24 hours, for compatible iPads.

That means it has to be an iPad with Wi-Fi plus Cellular connectivity, and many people plump for a Wi-Fi only model as it’s cheaper and you can always tether to your phone for a connection.

Additionally, if you have one that’s Wi-Fi plus Cellular, it needs to be unlocked and capable of working with an eSIM. That’s an extensive list of models, specified below.

An On-Demand Connection Regardless Of Carrier

The network claims it makes it the only major U.S. wireless provider to offer on-demand connectivity for these iPads regardless of which carrier the user is with.

The $3 charge applies from the second time you use the service — the first day pass is complimentary, though this is limited to one iPad per customer.

There are no subscriptions or contracts to tie yourself into, and no credit checks required for the Unlimited Day Pass.

Targeting The Unconnected Tablet Market

AT&T claims, I think correctly, that there are many iPad owners who have tablets that are capable of cellular connection but don’t have any cellular plan.

This is a convenient option because there is no long-term commitment, and it seems like a simple way of getting on board.

I suspect most iPad users will continue to tether to their phone when out of Wi-Fi area, but if, for example, you regularly use your iPad in an area where your carrier’s signal is weak but AT&T is better, it could be a useful and affordable option.

It’s something that could be useful for vacation, for instance, or in the event your home Wi-Fi suddenly fails.

Right now, the option is only available as a 24-hour pass, though the company plans to expand this in the future to include multi-day options that would cover a weekend or last for a week.
