In today’s column, I examine the recent remarks by Sam Altman about the AI singularity, which caused a tremendous stir throughout the mainstream media and social media. The outsized headlines are astronomically disproportionate to what the remarks actually signify.
Please take a deep breath. I will walk you through the transcript portions related to his interview comments about the AI singularity. Also, I provide a backstory about what the AI singularity is or might be, and its longstanding bumpy path as a theorized but not yet realized as a possibly attainable AI phenomenon. The bottom line is that nothing much has changed about AI from the day before he made his remark to the AI that we have right now. No sudden emergence of AI that is superhuman. No massive breakthrough. The world is still spinning on its axis.

The AI Singularity
Before we leap into Sam Altman’s remarks, I’d like to introduce the AI singularity as a lofty concept that has a plethora of definitions and meanings.
Some ardently believe that AI will reach a boiling point, and this will spur AI to suddenly engage in an upward spiral of intelligence begetting intelligence. It will be a kind of intelligence explosion. In an instant of time, perhaps a split second or maybe hours or days, AI will grow immensely in intelligence. This will reach the juncture of being on par with human intelligence. In addition, the spiraling will likely continue to push the AI toward superhuman intelligence. We will arrive initially at artificial general intelligence (AGI), and then presumably further extend into achieving artificial superintelligence (ASI).
For my in-depth explanation of this envisioned phenomenon, variously known as the AI singularity, see the link here. Has the spontaneous AI singularity happened? No. Do we know for sure it will happen? No. Is it highly speculative and a lot of conjecture? Yes.
Singularity And The Time Conundrum
One of the biggest unknowns among the many unknowns of an AI singularity is how time will factor into the whole kit-and-caboodle. Maybe it will happen in a split second, much faster than the blink of an eye. Or perhaps it will take hours or days, possibly months or years. Nobody knows.
The gist is that there are two unspecified facets:
- (1) Singularity happens at a point in time. The AI singularity will arise in a flash, and in one moment it didn’t exist and the next instantaneous moment it did. Boom, drop the mic.
- (2) Singularity occurs broadly along a line or curve. The AI singularity will get started and then play out over time, getting stronger stepwise, like proceeding along a lengthy line or up a sloping curve. It could take seconds, hours, days, months, years, decades, etc. It might be a smooth transition or completely staggered.
If the AI singularity were to happen all at once, I think we would realize that it has happened and proof would be easily provided. In contrast, the difficulty with the singularity arising on an incremental basis is that we can’t be sure where we are in the cooking process.
Suppose someone begins to cook a fine meal, but no one knows how long it will take to cook it. Perhaps we can see that the ham and eggs are heating up. Are we therefore nearing the end of the cooking process? Well, it depends. Maybe the pancakes and bacon haven’t even yet been brought into the kitchen. The crux is that with the AI singularity, it is darned hard to know whether it has started and equally vexing to ascertain how far along it is.
When Utterances Cause A Stir
One more important angle. An additional twist is that sometimes a remark can be made in an offhand manner, and if the remark is made by a notable person, all sorts of interpretations and wild speculation can ascend.
Imagine a world-renowned fund manager who, during an interview, was to say that they don’t believe in gold. Some might react by selling every ounce of gold that they own. Time to get out of gold! The chances are that the price of gold would plummet.
What if the fund manager was just offering their ad hoc opinion in the moment and might later reclarify their comment? Suppose that same fund manager had even previously made remarks about gold and it turned out that gold was doing fine. Nonetheless, the next time they made such a remark, the world goes bananas as the notable soothsayer is considered the final say on these matters.

What Sam Altman Said
On July 25, 2026, an otherwise innocuous posting of an interview of Sam Altman by the Relentless podcast happened to catch the eye of the news media. The hour-long interview has many aspects and covers a wide gamut of AI-related topics. It isn’t solely about the singularity. In fact, it is barely about the singularity.
Within that hour-long interview, there is a minute or two that lands on the topic of the AI singularity. The podcaster asked Sam Altman what drives him. Here is an excerpt from the posted transcript:
- “Well, on the previous question, the thing that drives me the most is like this. This is the most interesting important thing I can imagine doing, and we are now like in the singularity.”
- “Like this is the moment for the last 10 years ago; this was like a kind of far-off dream at best.”
- Um seemed very improbable, and now we’re like actually in the moment that we used to talk about at the lunch table in a very not serious way.”
- “Uh, and so, the thing that drives me is I’ve been waiting for this my whole life, and I think it’s going to be incredible, hugely positive, and awesome for the world.”
My interpretation is that Sam Altman is explaining that the driving force for him these days is that we are “… like in the singularity.” Indeed, he points out that ten years ago the singularity was a dreamy notion. Now, with the advances we’ve seen in AI, it seems to be his view that we are finally marching along on the path of singularity.
Meanwhile, it appears that some in the media have interpreted those comments to mean that we have avidly achieved the singularity. The intelligence explosion happened. Somewhere at OpenAI, spread across their many data centers, is this AGI or possibly ASI that has been spawned. Wow, the singularity is finally here. Humanity has turned the corner. History has been made.
The Curve Is Where We Are
Let’s see what else Sam Altman said on this weighty topic. A few moments after those above-cited comments, he then makes this additional point:
- “Um, but the main thing of what’s different than 10 years ago is like we’re actually in it. Like this is the real, I think it is both true that it’s all one crazy exponential and any moment is not like the tipping point and also that we are somehow in another one of those decisive periods where the curve can go one way or another, like it was when we started 10 years ago.”
In my opinion, this further cements the idea that he is not saying we have crossed the Rubicon and attained the AI singularity. I believe he is emphasizing that there isn’t likely a tipping point; there isn’t a single moment in time. It is a curve we are climbing incrementally.
And, significantly, I read the remark to establish that the curve might not lead us directly to the singularity as it “can go one way or another.” It is possibly a curve with many unforeseeable bends ahead. This seems to be an acknowledgement that we don’t know where we are on the singularity pathway and that the pathway itself hasn’t yet been discovered or crisply laid out.

The World We Are In
All told, my interpretation is that he was making a point that AI has advanced immensely in the last ten years, which makes sense and is certainly a non-contentious claim, and that the AI we have currently seems to be something that we might contend is part of singularity. The thing is that there isn’t any direct tangible proof of this. It is a belief, an opinion. This might be based on a variety of factors. It could be that he’s correct. Or it could be that he wants it to be true. A cynic might claim that it is business puffery. Etc.
A final thought for now. I respectfully suggest that the media be more mindful of these matters. As per the wise words of Issac Newton: “Truth is ever to be found in the simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.”
