3 Dualities Of The Genz Labor Market

What do you tell your son or daughter about how to navigate the work world in 2026?

So many parents are facing a thorny problem: the job market of today looks radically different than anything that has come before. It’s daunting. Younger workers increasingly feel boxed out, unwanted, and less desired by employers, as the world feels the impact of automation. So much of what humans used to do is now being done by machines, that the whole thing, to some, feels hopeless.

As I’ll show, there are some deep uncertainties, and even disagreements in framing and forecasting among the cognoscenti – will AI slash jobs or create them? Will young workers lose out, or not?

Here are three big things to think about if you’re in the unenviable position of having to give advice to a new grad.

Opportunity or Existential Threat

In a way, AI is like one of those strange pictures where you can see two different things, but not at once: the contours of a rabbit look like a human face, for example, or a set of perpendicular lines becomes a forest.

AI is kind of like that: sometimes, we envision a world of abundance, where humans live like kings and queens, delegating all labor to their machine helpers (or, in linguistic origin, ‘daemons’.) At other times, we feel a deep existential dread, thinking about the threat that AGI poses. Super-intelligent machines could hurt our self-images, etc.

That’s just one of three major principles of dissonance that soon-to-be careerists and new grads, and everyone else, are facing right now.

Labor Shortages or Job Shortages

There’s also some demographic disagreement between those who think that automation will create meteoric unemployment rates, and others who think its impact will be outweighed by factors like generational change.

“At current immigration levels, the U.S. labor force is projected to shrink by roughly 1.2 million workers by 2040,” write Felix Aidala and Laura Ullrich at Hiring Lab. “The near-term decline is sharper: a drop of about 3.7%, or 5.9 million workers, by 2032 – driven in large part by aging and retiring workers, rather than AI-driven change.”

I was reading this article at Fortune, about the choices that Gen Z will make. I’ll get into that in just a bit, but here are some stats that writer Jason Ma used to support this idea:

“Lightcast, a labor market data company, predicted in 2024 that U.S. employers will suffer “the largest labor shortage the country has ever seen” amid a demographic drought. Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce estimated last year that the U.S. economy will need 5.25 million more workers with education and training beyond high school, warning that 171 occupations will face skills shortages through 2032 without massive increases in education.”

The upshot of both of these pieces seems to be similar to something that I’ve heard sitting in conferences and conducting interviews at events like TedX Boston 250 this year: that the major problem is a mismatch in labor skills, and the goal is to re-train workers for a very different business world.

The Generalist and the Specialist

But what kinds of skills will Gen Z need? Here, again, there’s a debate. Ma illustrates the divide between those who would counsel new workers to become jacks-of-all-trades, and others who would encourage them to focus on just one thing.

On the one hand, Ma quotes economist Ed Yardeni as suggesting that today’s jobs will require specialized focus on some AI-related skills, in areas such as agentic AI, responsible AI and AI infrastructure.

But Ma also quotes another economist, Simon Johnson, a Nobel laureate and MIT professor, who has a different idea:

“The general-purpose nerd is someone who can master the latest AI over the weekend,” Johnson said, promoting the idea that young people will need this kind of broadness. “On Monday and Tuesday, they can interview real people face to face and learn things. On Wednesday, they can read a 50-year-old book that has not yet been digitized, make sense of it and figure out how you’re going to use it. On Thursday, they can run a podcast. On a Friday, they prepare a one-page memo for the minister.”

For the minister?

Well, you get the idea.

Basically, a young person has big choices to make. This is not the world of yesterday, and that’s becoming more evident every day.

Will today’s young professionals choose to be specialists or general purpose nerds? That’s largely a matter of personal preference. Each one of them will have to forge a path. And this jungle is not mapped out. Stay tuned.
