The full launch doesn’t happen until the fall, but if you have any questions how big the return of Gears of War will be, take a look at social media and you’ll see the buzz is real. The beta is just around the corner and I have the info you need to be one of the first to play the newest version of the franchise. Let’s talk Gears of War.

When Does The Gears Of War: E-Day Beta Start?
There are two windows for early access. The first one runs August 6 through August 10, and the second one, (which is the open beta that is open to all players) runs from from August 13 through August 17.
The exact clocks matter more than the dates if you want a first-night squad together. Early Access begins August 6 at 12 p.m. PT and ends August 10 at 10 a.m. PT. The second weekend begins August 13 at 12 p.m. PT and ends August 17 at 10 a.m. PT.
That puts both openers at 3 p.m. ET. The full game arrives October 6. That’s a month before GTA 6. How much of the game’s audience will be retained?

How Do You Get Early Access To The Beta?
There are two paths, and neither requires a signup. Early Access is open to players who pre-ordered across Xbox Series X|S and Steam, and to anyone holding Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass.
How you download depends on where the pre-order lives. Xbox digital pre-orders should see the beta client appear automatically under “My Games and Apps” on console or “My Library” in the PC app.
If it doesn’t show, searching “Gears Beta” in the Store finds it. Game Pass members search the same term in Game Pass and download the client directly. Steam digital pre-orders get the client added to their library automatically.
Physical buyers have the one step that can go wrong. Physical and Collector’s Edition pre-orders receive a code by email from the retailer, redeemable at xbox.com/redeem. The Coalition points people to Xbox Game Studios Shop customer service first if the code never shows up.
On Xbox Series X|S consoles you need at least a Game Pass Essentials membership to play online. A Microsoft account is not required on Steam, though you need one linked to send a cross-platform squad invite. These are the little things that’ll piss you off when you’re trying to get matches in during an early access period that will fly by — especially if the game is good.
What Can You Play And Unlock In Each Weekend?
The two weekends are not the same build. Early Access players get Horde Siege, the evolution of the series’ PVE mode that splits 12 players into three squads of four across a single map. The open weekend adds the refined 4v4 Versus for competitive play on top of it. As usual, the beta content is only a subset of what ships at launch.
Rewards unlock through challenges and carry into your inventory in October. Hitting Player Level 20 unlocks the Epic Blast Damage Mags character skin. Extracting from Horde Siege eight times on Infantry difficulty or higher unlocks the Rare Crush the Bug weapon skin set. Twenty-five headshots gets a banner, 10 revives gets an emblem, five Prototype Lancer chainsaw executions gets an icon. Simply launching the beta earns the Open Beta Medal and the First in the Fight title.
There’s two progression tracks in the early access builds. Challenge and Medal progress, rewards, Class progression and Player Level all carry from weekend one to weekend two. At launch, only the Beta title, Beta Medal and challenge rewards survive. Class progression, Player Level and other Medal progress reset.
PC players have one hard blocker. NVIDIA users must update to GeForce Game Ready Driver 610.74 or the game will not launch at all.
Why Does This Return Matter?
Even in a year that is seemingly haunted by Grand Theft Auto 6, Gears fans are being heard. It didn’t hurt that WWE SummerSlam was sponsored by GoW: E-Day and the Usos came to the ring with a fully-decked-out Gears of War entrance attire.
Gears will always have a special place in my heart. It’s the first game I ever played competitively online and it taught me a lot about how online communities work. It also still has some of the most awesome character models in gaming.
