What The Zero-Click Era Reveals About The Data You Missed

Todd Fisher is the co-founder and CEO of CTM (formerly CallTrackingMetrics).

Which of your marketing efforts actually brought in customers? The answer dictates how you plan and budget moving forward. Executives have trusted that their teams could answer this question with relative accuracy because the digital tools tracking customer behavior seemed to show the whole path from first impression to final sale. This is no longer the case.

The way people search online has fundamentally changed, revealing holes in how customer behavior is measured. The implications directly impact how businesses allocate spend and evaluate marketing’s ROI.

The customer journey used to look simple in a report. A person typed a question into Google, clicked on a result, arrived on your website, filled out a contact form and became a lead your team could trace back to its source. Marketing measurement was then built on that clear line from search to sale. While that foundation appeared complete, something was missing.

Enter the zero-click search, in which people perform a Google search and get their answers from the results page instead of clicking through to a website. In the first four months of 2026, 68% of Google searches ended without a click through to a website. The main driver is AI overviews, the AI-written summaries Google now places at the top of many search results. The AI overview answers the question, leaving the searcher without a reason to visit a website.

The same pattern is happening with AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude, which many people now use as a starting point for research instead of a traditional search engine. This means that people form opinions about your company, product or service inside a chatbot thread, and none of that is tracked by your website analytics. About half of U.S. adults report using AI chatbots, up from a third in 2024, and 60% read those summaries at the top of search results. A growing segment of the journey that leads a customer to you is hidden from your measurement tools.

What Measurement Left Out

Many leaders are placing the blame for this new blind spot in customer behavior on external factors such as Google’s design choices or a chatbot’s algorithm. But it actually uncovers a hidden truth: The click was never the whole journey; it was just a piece of the pie that your tools captured.

Until recently, most companies would attribute credit to the marketing touch points that led to a sale, based on which ad or channel drove the sale. This worked well online with platforms like Google Analytics or HubSpot, which made it easy to trace a site visit or form submission back to the ad or email that prompted it. But offline moments, like phone calls, have been harder to track, especially for businesses selling higher-priced products and services that often involve phone calls.

Most companies treat those calls as an afterthought in their reporting, if they are counted at all, and are left to guess about their impact. Tracking dashboards can look comprehensive and still leave out phone calls, even though they lead to sales. Since online tracking alone only shows part of the picture, teams have relied on remembering to ask, “Where did you hear about us?”

The Principle Behind Better Measurement

To measure customer behavior more accurately, many businesses are using call tracking based on a technique called dynamic number insertion. Call tracking automatically changes the phone number a customer sees on your website based on how they arrived at that page. Because each source has its own number, an incoming call can be traced back to the exact ad, campaign or search term that led the customer there.

Dynamic number insertion can be combined with multi-touch attribution, an approach that credits each step a customer takes to the specific source rather than just the last click before purchase. And finally, phone calls can be tracked alongside web visits and form submissions in one connected view.

Better measurement allows you to account for more of the moments when interest converts to revenue. The more you know, the easier it is to see what your marketing efforts accomplished and where to align future efforts.

Ready Or Not, The Change Is Here

Fewer people are clicking through to websites before calling; instead, they’re arriving already sold on an AI summary they’ve read. Companies that built their entire analytics system on click tracking will feel blinded by the shift and realize how narrow their vantage point has been.

The practical move is to stop chasing the click into Google’s walled garden and start building a measurement practice that connects marketing sources to real outcomes across every channel a customer uses, whether that’s online or offline. Businesses fear losing visibility due to the changing landscape, but it has always been incomplete. The zero-click era just makes it impossible to ignore.
