EA devs for Madden 27 has had the opportunity to watch how things have unfolded with EA College Football 27. There was good, bad and the bottom line was really good. The gameplay and overall EACF 27 package should have raised expectations. The college game is stellar and the pro iteration might be even better. Let’s talk Madden 27.

The Good
What actually changed in gameplay?
Defense has seen the biggest changes. While the pre-snap options are on both sides of the ball, it feels like defenses have gotten the most assistance. That’s justified as Madden has been mostly an offensive game for years. The changes feel great, but take some time before you’ll be able to truly lock them in your bag.
How much smarter are the linebackers?
I tested the linebackers’ supposed increase IQ — especially as it pertains to sitting on the drag routes. It’s not a joke. If you’re leaning on it heavy in the first quarter. It feels like midway through the second quarter adjustments have been made. It’s more challenging, but it’s better for the overall game because it gives more life to your franchise mode journey and is less infuriating in head-to-head because your CPU-controlled players are smarter.

Did the pre-snap overhaul add depth or just steps?
The pre-snap options might actually be too complicated for some players. But that’s OK. It will begin to represent a skill gap and it could be the difference between actually beating the CPU late in your franchise mode season on higher difficulty levels. That’s a good thing, but again, it’s not forced on you.
Is the Catch Meter worth turning on?
This is a mixed bag for me. I don’t think you need it and Madden proves it’s not entirely necessary to experience this year’s game because you’re asked if you want it on or off at the outset. Many fans have been playing the game for years and aren’t necessarily into a radical change on such a huge mechanic like catching passes. That said, it does add a potential skill gap for serious competitive players.
The thing is, that’s not the vast majority of the community — or any gaming community for that matter — regardless of what your favorite streamer or YouTuber says. I like that it is optional, but if you turn it on, it accomplishes that delicate balance any designer should shoot for: easy to understand, but difficult to master.
Is this the best version of franchise mode?
Yes, and it’s not even close. We’re finally at a place where the positives far outweigh anything that’s considered a negative in franchise mode. The Persona Engine is such a major positive on the mode that it’s tough to quantify how much of a soul this addition brings. Giving every player a personality totally brings the mode to life and there’s even more that can be done on this front.
Also, the Weekly Recap and Halftime Shows have received a much-needed boost from last year’s inaugural look. I loved what I saw and this too can be built out even more. What’s most important is that there are undeniable strong steps and franchise mode is finally in a strong place.
There are some bugs at launch, but it would be silly to ding the game on things that we know will be addressed within the first patch or two.
How do contract negotiations and Free Agent Frenzy hold up?
The concepts are there. There is some tuning necessary, much of which has been addressed in the first patch, which I covered earlier. Overall, the free agent period feels as fun as any offseason mechanic in sports video games.
The Bad
Is CPU Wear and Tear management a problem?
The one issue that is bothering me at or just before launch is the CPU’s Wear and Tear management. As of the publishing of this review, CPU teams are allowing guys to simply smoke themselves rather than properly substituting. I don’t anticipate this will last long and I doubt it is an update that will require you to restart your franchise mode.
Is the draft presentation substance or decoration?
The NFL Draft presentation is only mildly improved. With what we’re seeing from Weekly Recap and Halftime Show, it would be nice to see better presentation with the NFL Draft. You’ll be hard-pressed to see many notable updates here. It’s functional and not as buggy as past years, but underwhelming when compared to other aspects of franchise. That said, in an annual cycle, there’s only so much that can get heavy work. With what we see with the Persona Engine this year, perhaps Madden 28 will see more work done with the NFL Draft.
Where does Superstar mode stand?
I’m not a huge Superstar mode player, but the G.O.A.T tracker gives me some reason to have interest. I can’t say that it will convert me, but it supplies purpose and goals which is something the mode needed more than anything else. I’d still like to see more here that connects you to the player on and off the field. Left behind is probably too harsh. The G.O.A.T tracker does some work, but if it is compared to Franchise or Ultimate Team, yes, it is behind.
The Bottom Line
Who is this year’s version for?
This year’s version is for long-suffering franchise mode fans who have wanted customization and functionality. Madden 27 is still missing the ability to import draft classes from college — which is an issue that dings both games. It also still sucks that legends stay locked in Ultimate Team. That’s my biggest gripe against the game because that’s not about NIL technicalities. That comes from a flawed thought process. Still, I’d be lying if I said franchise mode fans won’t be thrilled with this year’s game.
Is it worth the upgrade from Madden 26?
This is 100% worth the upgrade — especially if you want the best franchise mode experience. If you want deeper gameplay, this will also check that box for you as well.
What does EA have to fix next?
Wear and Tear and franchise mode bugs should be the primary target. Again, nothing is really broken that can’t be fixed. The draft class imports and the emancipation of legends are a battle for another year.
