The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is a refresh on Google’s existing foldable design. On the surface, it remains a close visual match to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, although the exterior materials are tougher and it comes with an IP68 rating. But it is iterative, and some of the cutting-edge design cues around weight and dimensions in the competition are not present here.
Google has updated the camera hardware with a new 50-megapixel main lens, a 48-megapixel telephoto lens and improved light sensitivity all round. The processing behind the camera, powered by the Google-designed Tensor G6, also shows improvements, with reviewers noting improved low-light performance, a wider choice of styles and profiles for consumers to choose from, and more tools for creators, such as a built-in teleprompter.
The addition of HiLight, a multi-coloured LED on the rear of the 11 Pro Fold, is curious. It certainly gives the foldable a point of differentiation from other premium devices (and it’s a feature shared across the Pixel 11 line-up), but its utility will be limited. It will show a strobe of lights to show Gemini AI is listening, and you can assign one of the five colors to a contact so it will alert you when they are calling. However, support for message alerts is not available yet. It’s a solid idea but with incredibly limited functionality – hopefully future software updates will open up the system to more first-party apps and services.
The Tensor G6 is certainly scoring higher in benchmarks than the Pixel 10 Pro did (by 21 percent on single-core and 17 percent on multi-core), but it falls short compared to competing handsets. Last year’s iPhone 17 Pro was, in some cases, more than 40 percent ahead of the G6. Yet Google has always noted that the G6 is rarely about ultimate power; instead it is optimised for on-device AI. This is an area Google would much rather lead than be in raw performance.
The Competent Nature Of The Pixel 11 Pro Fold
Comparing the Pixel 11 Pro Fold against equivalent smartphones from the likes of Samsung with the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Honor Magic V6, the Fold falls a little short with its hardware. In isolation, the specs and the benchmarks are improvements over last year’s model, but when you start measuring the Fold against the alternatives, it’s hard to call out anything as class-leading.

Pixel is a consumer brand that has found its space in the retail market, so it needs to be good. At the same time, Google is shepherding every part of the Android ecosystem; with multiple hardware partners offering multiple options to consumers, any Pixel device can’t be seen as too good lest they directly challenge Google’s existing relationships.
That’s why I use the word competent. The hardware in the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is competent. If you have this Pixel, it will deliver you a solid and usable solution at its price point, no massive mistakes, but perhaps nothing physical that genuinely soars. This is the baseline that Google has set and hopes its partners will build on. There is a bigger prize at stake than “thinner, lighter, and brighter.”
The Pixel 11 Pro Fold Is An AI Standard Bearer
One area where the Pixel 11 Pro Fold stands out is software. In a broad sense, these are the first smartphones to have Android 17 out of the box. The latest version of Android comes with countless small tweaks and updates to larger features, in some cases taking new approaches cut from whole cloth.
Pixel is where Google introduced, promoted, and established its supremacy in mobile artificial intelligence, first supported by cloud computing and later bringing more functionality to be processed locally. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were heralded at launch as the first AI Smartphones, and that direction has been evident in both design and marketing since then.

This may sound like the perfect time for a “jack of all trades, master of none” comment, but the biases in the platform suggest that the latter – dominating and directing the AI market – is where Google needs the Pixel 11 Pro Fold to be delivering as much potential as possible. It is competent to consumers, unthreatening to its partners, and a force of nature in the AI space.
