Back when this new Missing Link Optimus Prime toy was revealed last Summer, I had no idea that it would be this good.
The premise of the toy is that Takara Tomy have retooled the original 1985 Optimus Prime toy to include modern articulation and an array of other gimmicks.
The result being a toy that allows you to actually pose it properly and includes things like the Matrix of Leadership, and a bunch of other nice accessories.
Other changes are having the hands fold and tuck into the body of the toy, rather than just being removable. The hands also have a degree of articulation now as well, allowing them to be open and closed.
Apart from all of that, this is very much the toy I remember having as a kid. It even has the heat sensitive Autobot sticker at the top, which really brings me back.
There are currently two releases of this toy: the regular version and the anime version (without the trailer).
I picked up the anime version first (shown above) and it is pretty much spot on to what I remember, but only much better in terms of how you can pose it and with its proper cartoon accurate coloring.
Both are available right now though and can be easily imported from places such as HobbyLink Japan, specifically that of the regular version (with trailer) and the anime version.
I honestly wasn’t expecting this toy to turn out quite so well, but Takara Tomy have done a wonderful job here. For anyone that grew up watching the original Transformers like I did, you will want to get this as soon as humanly possible.
Disclosure: I bought this toy with my own money.
