In a slightly different movie for a Gundam anime, Silver Phantom is taking the VR route and it could be quite interesting.
Admittedly, I’m not that interested in the VR side of things, but what I am interested in is when Silver Phantom is set in the Universal Century timeline and who is working on it.
For the timeline, we are dealing with UC 0096, which is around the time of Gundam Unicorn and a few years after Char’s Counterattack. That’s a narratively dense and rich period with a lot of interesting potential.
The other side to this is that this era also has a lot of fascinating mobile suits, with quite a few MSV units being noteworthy.
Specifically, when it comes to the Delta Gundam, which seems to be what the main Gundam is based off. Especially regarding its faceplate and cockpit armor, although the head has the all-important V-fin this time around.
As for the staff, we have Kenichi Suzuki directing this anime. This being a fascinating choice after his work on shows like JoJo’ Bizarre Adventure. We then have Kotobuki Tsukasa handling the character designs (not to be confused with the Takarazuka actress of the same name), and he is a nicely classic and telanted choice. Finally, the highlight here is the return of mecha design veteran Mika Akitaka, who has a long history with Gundam.
Especially as Akitaka did many of the Char’s Counterattack MSV designs, with the Re-GZ Custom being one of my personal favorites.
While there are no specific release dates for this anime movie as yet, it will be released for the Meta Quest VR platform.
