The long, long reign of Baby Reindeer on top of Netflix’s Top 10 list has finally come to an end, close to a month after it was first released on April 11.
Baby Reindeer has been unseated by A Man in Full, the new Jeff Daniels drama about a real estate mogul who sees his empire crumble. The show is reviewing poorly, a 43% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 57% from fans, but that does not prevent many Netflix series from reaching the top spot. But it’s a far cry from Baby Reindeer’s 98% score, certainly.
Baby Reindeer has actually thrown Netflix into the Emmy race with a likely nomination for Jessica Gunning in the Limited Series category, along with potential nominations for Richard Gadd and the show as a whole. The story of a man stalked relentlessly by a woman is the real-life horror story of Gadd himself, creating a wholly unique dynamic to the series, as we’ve rarely seen anything like this. It will clearly not get a second season so this viewership isn’t needed for something like that, but it’s a huge success for Netflix and a reminder that it can still produce high quality gems from unlikely places.
A Man in Full is also presented as a limited series, so viewership here will probably not matter either. It’s based on a book by Tom Wolfe in 1998. Interestingly, actress Regina King directed half the episodes. She’s previously directed individual episodes of various shows over the years from Shameless to This is Us to Insecure, but it’s her first time doing half a series. But no, despite a lot of talent attached, the series is not reviewing well, and it’s unclear how long it may remain at #1.
The rest of the list is made up of things like Selling the OC, The Asunta Case and Dead Boy Detectives. I’m most curious about the fate of Dead Boy Detectives where the Sandman spin-off is angling for a second season no doubt, but it doesn’t seem to have put up all that significant numbers.
Bridgerton season 3 is on the way after a long, long break, and I have to imagine that will end up planted at #1 for a very long time after its debut, no matter how it reviews, as it’s one of Netflix’s highest profile offerings. More to come.
