May is shuffling to an end, and June is upon us. The first weekend of the month offers up some fun streaming options, though a number of them are older movies newly arriving on Netflix, Hulu and other streamers. There are only a handful of new shows and movies coming out, though later in the month we have new seasons of The Boys and House Of The Dragon.
Let’s dive right in!
Eric (Netflix)
Benedict Cumberbatch stars as a puppeteer named Vincent who thinks he can find his missing son by getting a big blue monster named Eric on TV. The limited series is set in 1980s New York City. All six episodes are out now on Netflix. It’s reviewing fairly well with critics (70% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a little better with audiences (80%).
Mayor Of Kingstown (Paramount+)
Jeremy Renner is less than two years out from his horrific snowplow accident that very nearly killed him, but he’s already back in the starring role in Taylor Sheridan’s Mayor of Kingstown. The third season of the crime drama premieres this Sunday on Paramount+.
Jim Henson Idea Man (Disney+)
Director Ron Howard explores the life and imagination of Muppets-creator Jim Henson. This looks really great. For anyone who loves Kermit the Frog, definitely check this out. Maybe Disney could get the rights to The Dark Crystal and revive that for a second season!
1917 (Netflix)
One of the best war films ever made, 1917 is a must-watch for anybody who finds the first World War fascinating and really just an astonishingly well-made film. Even if you don’t like war movies, you should watch this one. It’s brilliant.
The Batman (Prime Video)
Matt Reeves brought us a very new version of the Caped Crusader in The Batman. Robert Pattinson’s emo-goth Batman is a bit grungier than previous iterations. The film itself was quite good, with Paul Dano the perfect Riddler. It just ran about 20-30 minutes too long. I haven’t seen this since it was in theaters, so I’m due for a rewatch. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this movie: Colin Farrell plays the Penguin. I had no idea that was him when I saw it.
Blue Lights (Prime Video)
It’s not new, but I just finished watching the second season of Blue Lights and thought I should recommend it to readers because it’s just a terrific Irish police drama. If you enjoyed Line Of Duty or Happy Valley you really need to check this out. It’s not as good as Happy Valley but it’s still great with lots of wonderful characters and a compelling story set in Belfast.
The Dead Don’t Hurt (In Theaters)
Viggo Mortensen wrote, directed and starred in this Western film. He also composed the score. It’s getting a solid 85% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences are not impressed. Only 40% say they enjoy the movie, with many saying it’s slow and boring. I guess we will see . . . .
