Beyond Cookieless: Why You Need To Prepare Now, Despite Delays

After finally taking steps to implement its long-promised (and many-times-delayed) purge of third-party cookies, Google announced in late April that it would once again push back the timeline. With no definitive date set for the transition, advertisers are left wondering what to do. But regardless of timing, advertisers who rely on third-party cookies to understand their customers’ behavior across the web need to make other plans.

Advertisers aren’t the only ones who will be impacted, though. When cookie deprecation finally does see the light of day, the changes will have far-reaching implications for everyone who uses the internet (i.e., just about everyone).

Impact On Advertising

The worry around cookies will certainly be most deeply felt in planning and executing advertising campaigns. Without cookies, advertising is poised for some fundamental changes.

• Less Precise Targeting: Third-party cookies help advertisers track user behavior across the web and target ads accordingly. Without them, it may be more challenging to deliver personalized ads to specific demographics or interests.

• Shift Toward First-Party Data: Advertisers will likely need to rely more on first-party data collected from their own websites or apps. This data can still provide insights into user behavior and preferences, but it may not be as extensive or easily shareable across platforms as third-party cookie data. This applies mostly to larger players who have enough first-party data to net meaningful insights.

• Increased Reliance On Alternative Technologies: Some advertisers will explore and invest in alternative tracking technologies and methods, such as browser fingerprinting, contextual targeting and cohort-based advertising. However, Google has signaled that it will take steps to shut down workarounds that don’t prioritize privacy.

• Impact On Measurement And Attribution: The removal of third-party cookies could complicate measurement and attribution efforts for advertisers. It may become more difficult to track the effectiveness of advertising campaigns across different channels and platforms, leading to challenges in optimizing marketing strategies and budgets.

The elimination of third-party cookies will require advertisers to rethink their approaches to targeting, measurement and engagement in the digital advertising ecosystem. Luckily, there are ways that advertisers can adapt and succeed in this evolving landscape.

Steps Advertisers Can Take To Prepare

Despite the fact that the can has once again been kicked down the road, advertisers should implement alternatives to third-party cookies now. The shift toward privacy-focused marketing is inevitable and already underway. If cookie deprecation happens abruptly, unprepared businesses will be at a significant disadvantage. Here are a few ways you can prepare now.

• Non-Cookie Identifiers: As cookies scale down, alternative identifiers like RampIDs, UID2s, mobile device identifiers and more are scaling up. One particularly well-known alternative is email-based identifiers, which offer a direct and reliable way to target users without relying on cookies.

By leveraging email addresses, advertisers can create customized audience segments and deliver personalized messaging based on user profiles and preferences. Advertisers can diversify their approach by running multiple identifiers in parallel, allowing them to cast a wider net and optimize for performance.

• Contextual Advertising: Contextual targeting involves delivering ads based on the content of the web pages users view. By analyzing the context and themes of the content, advertisers can infer users’ interests and intent without relying on individual tracking cookies. Contextual advertising ensures relevance and alignment between ad content and user interests, leading to higher engagement and conversion rates. Some research has shown that contextual targeting can outperform traditional audience-based targeting methods in certain scenarios.

• Account-Based Advertising: Account-based advertising (ABA) enables advertisers to target specific companies or organizations based on their IP addresses or other firmographic data. By focusing on high-value accounts or target prospects, advertisers can deliver personalized messaging and content tailored to the needs and preferences of decision-makers within those organizations.

ABA relies on data enrichment and segmentation to identify and prioritize target accounts, allowing advertisers to allocate resources more efficiently and effectively. ABA can deliver significant ROI and revenue growth, particularly in B2B marketing contexts where targeting precision and account engagement are critical.

• Privacy Sandbox: Google’s Privacy Sandbox initiative aims to develop privacy-preserving advertising solutions that protect user data while still enabling effective ad targeting and measurement. Advertisers should stay informed about the latest developments in the Privacy Sandbox and explore opportunities to participate in pilot programs or beta tests of new targeting technologies. By embracing Privacy Sandbox initiatives, advertisers can future-proof their advertising strategies and ensure compliance with evolving privacy regulations.

Most importantly, diversify your assets now before cookies go away. Having multiple data assets such as a company graph and a people graph—as well as integrations with CRMs and MAPs—is key to deanonymizing website traffic and mapping to ABM segments or lists of prospect accounts.

Beyond Advertising

The implications of Google’s third-party cookie deprecation will undoubtedly extend beyond advertisers, significantly impacting the entire internet ecosystem. It marks a significant step toward enhancing user privacy, aligning with the growing demand for greater control over personal data. By eliminating third-party cookies, users can expect a heightened sense of privacy and autonomy over their online activities, leading to increased trust in digital platforms and services.

On the other hand, it will also have a downside. While it may result in fewer targeted ads, users could also encounter less personalized content and recommendations. This shift could prompt website operators to reevaluate content delivery strategies, necessitating alternative methods for engaging users and delivering relevant content.

The removal of third-party cookies will also pose challenges to website functionality, particularly for those dependent on cookies for essential services like login sessions, personalized content delivery and e-commerce transactions. Website operators will need to find alternative solutions to maintain usability.

Overall, the elimination of third-party cookies signals a broader transformation in the digital ecosystem, prompting adaptation and innovation across industries and regulatory landscapes to uphold user privacy and ensure a seamless online experience.

By taking proactive measures to prepare for the removal of third-party cookies, advertisers and non-advertisers alike can mitigate potential disruptions and position themselves for success in a digital world focused on privacy and user-centric experiences.
