NYT ‘Strands’ #106 Hints, Spangram And Answers For Monday, June 17th

Looking for Sunday’s Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:

Well, Father’s Day has come and gone. I hope everyone had a lovely time, whether you’re a father or just have a father, or even if—perhaps especially if—you don’t have one in your life, I imagine that can be kind of difficult on a day like Father’s Day. I hope you all had a good day. I like Father’s Day now because my teenage children always just want to do their own thing but on Father’s Day (and on my birthday later this week) they have no excuses not to watch movies with me. I do miss when they were little and just wanted to spend time with me all the time. It’s funny how we can take that for granted when we’re young parents and overwhelmed.

Ah, enough with the bittersweet. I saw Inside Out 2 this weekend and one of the most hilarious parts was the new emotion, Nostalgia, who would pop out briefly before being rushed away by the other emotions. “Too soon!” they exclaimed. Well, I am steeped in nostalgia now. Once it gets its clutches on you, it never really lets go.

Alright, let’s puzzle out this Strands grid, shall we?

How To Play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day. Keep playing, in other words. It’s our collective mission to keep this game alive and get it on the app!

There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.

You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Strands still isn’t on the New York Times games app, but you can play it right here.

What Is Today’s Strands Hint?

Scroll slowly! Just after the hint for today’s Strands puzzle, I’ll reveal what the answer words are.

The official theme hint for today’s Strand puzzle is: Picking up the pieces

Here’s an extra hint to help guide you to the solution: Sorry, I don’t have a clue for you today. I hope I’m not in trouble, but it’s a risk I had to take.

What Are Today’s Strands Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Strands answers.

Today’s Spangram

I’ll first tell you the spangram and show you where that is on the grid. I’ll then tell you the other words and show you how they fit in.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Strands spangram is . . .

BOARDGAMES

Here’s where the Spangram is on the grid:

All Today’s Strands Answers

These are fairly straightforward once you have the SPANGRAM, unless you’ve never played board games before.

If you need extra help, spoilers below!

Here’s the full list of words:

  • MONOPOLY
  • CLUE
  • SORRY
  • BATTLESHIP
  • TROUBLE
  • RISK

Today’s Strands Breakdown

I do love board games and I’ve played all of these, though not many of them in a long time. Once I found CLUE I immediately found the SPANGRAM and everything else fell into place until I had just RISK and TROUBLE left. I didn’t see the ‘R’ for RISK for the longest time and that threw me off, but once I did it was easy enough. Of these, I’d say CLUE and MONOPOLY are my favorites, though I have enjoyed many a game of SORRY. RISK was always a game I thought I’d like more, but I feel like it needs more depth in its war mechanics to really shine. BATTLESHIP is all dumb luck. TROUBLE is the game I’ve played the least. I have enough trouble to deal with in my life already.

How did you do on your Strands today? Let me know on Twitter and Facebook.
