We Just Learned How This Spider ‘Catfishes’ Male Fireflies—And Then Eats Them

Spiders are among nature’s most adaptable predators, each species fine-tuning its diet to match its unique hunting style. Take the deadly Sydney funnel-web, for instance—it’s not just content with cockroaches, beetles and other arthropods but has been known to take down vertebrates like small frogs and lizards as well. Then there’s the diving bell spider, a true anomaly, hunting its prey underwater, from insects to small fish, even. These arachnids have honed their skills over millions of years, perfecting the art of ambush with remarkable precision.

But a type of orb-weaving spider Araneus ventricosus, known for its intricately designed web, has evolved a particularly ingenious method of capturing their prey—fireflies, as an August 2024 study published in Current Biology shows. This spider species, it appears, has developed a strategy that involves manipulating the fireflies’ own mating signals against them.

These Orb-Weaving Spiders Manipulate Male Fireflies Into ‘Posing’ As Females

“Catfishing” is when someone lures others to go out on a date with them by pretending to be someone they’re not. In a similarly devious way, orb-weaving spiders, according to the study, cause male fireflies caught in their web into mimicking the bioluminescent signals of females.

Male fireflies that come across this “female” signal are tricked into coming closer—much like human catfishing, but with far more dire consequences. Before they know it, these hoodwinked males are entrapped. Once ensnared, the spider quickly engages in a “wrap-bite” sequence, where it wraps the prey in silk to immobilize it and then delivers a venomous (but not fatal) bite.

The spider perpetuates this almost-comical cycle of deception, using each newly ensnared male to lure even more unsuspecting victims into its web, until it has amassed enough of a food supply to feast to its heart’s content.

This Essentially Exploits How Male And Female Firefly Mating Signals Differ

Male fireflies typically use rapid, multi-pulse flashes from both their lanterns—the technical term for the light-emitting organs on firefly abdomens—to attract females. In contrast, female fireflies, which only have one lantern, respond with slower, single-pulse flashes.

Ensnared males, the researchers found, shifted from their usual multi-pulse flashes to single-pulse signals, using only one of their lanterns. This shift is not a subtle change either—it is a complete transformation in signaling behavior, effectively turning the captured males into decoys.

The data showed that the presence of the spider was critical to this effect, too. Significantly more male fireflies were attracted and subsequently trapped when a spider was present in the web, compared to when it was absent. While this proves that the shift isn’t random, an important question is yet to be answered:

How Does The Spider Successfully Tweak Firefly Mating Signals?

The exact mechanism behind the spider’s manipulation of firefly signals is still not fully understood, but the study offers some compelling possibilities.

Researchers suggest that the spider’s venom or its bite may interfere with the firefly’s neural processes, causing the male fireflies to emit female-like single-pulse flashes. This venom could be altering neurotransmitters responsible for the flashes.

Though this is just conjecture at this point, it’s beyond fascinating that the spider has turned the very signals essential for procreation into instruments of death—whether via neurochemical manipulation through its venom or simply by inducing fear in the trapped fireflies with its wrap-bite strategy.

This orb-weaving spider’s manipulative ways may worsen your fear of spiders, but did you know some people can be clinically afraid of animals? Take this test to find out where you rank: Fear of Animals Scale
