WBO women’s welterweight champion Mikaela Mayer and bitter rival Sandy Ryan will run it back on Saturday night in Las Vegas at the BleauLive Theater at Fontainebleau.
Their first meeting in September 2024 was arguably the fight of the year, and the premier rematches in the women’s divisions have been just as good as the original. So it’s possible, we could get another instant classic.

In the U.K., the fight will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, with the timing adjusted to early Sunday morning, March 30, at approximately 3:00 AM BST due to the clock change to British Summer Time.
Mayer outworked Ryan to dethrone her in their first fight, but the win didn’t come without controversy—before, during, and after the first bout.
Why Mikaela Mayer and Sandy Ryan Are Such Bitter Rivals
Mayer and Ryan’s rivalry was originally ignited when the latter began training with Kay Koroma, Mayer’s long-time coach of nearly a decade, after Ryan moved to the U.S. following her fight with Jessica McCaskill in September 2023. Mayer seemingly felt betrayed, accusing Ryan of sneaking into her training as she made the move to welterweight.
Mayer stopped training with Koroma and assembled a new team with Kofi Jantuah and Al Mitchell. Koroma remained in Ryan’s corner and trained her for their first fight in 2024, and he will be in her corner on Saturday night.
Pre-Fight Paint Attack on Ryan Escalated Their Beef
Just hours before their first fight at Madison Square Garden, Ryan was struck with a can of red paint as she left her hotel in New York. Ryan blamed Mayer’s team, believing it was a deliberate attempt to unsettle her, while Mayer denied involvement, claiming she was upstairs preparing for the fight.
Nonetheless, the incident added another layer to their rivalry.
Not Everyone Felt Mayer Won the First Fight
Mayer won the first fight via majority decision (95-95, 97-93, 96-94). The fight was great for fans, and despite the animosity, the two women elevated women’s boxing. However, some believed Ryan did enough to keep her title.
All of the elements made the first fight a major story and necessitated Saturday’s rematch.
Mayer and Ryan Have Continued to Trade Barbs
Leading up to Saturday’s fight, the pair have launched a fusillade of insults at each other. Mayer called Ryan “weak-minded” and questioned her character, while Ryan labeled Mayer “trashy” and unprofessional, especially after a faceoff where Mayer flipped her off.
It seems safe to say these two women do not like each other, and if Ryan wins, we could see a trilogy fight.
If Mayer wins, Ryan may have to simply accept her rival has her number.
