Transportation Flag On The Play

Transportation Flag On The Play

The suspension of Teddy Bridgewater is a missed opportunity for youth empowerment, an unexpected turn of events, a flag on the play. Former Detroit Lions quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater has been suspended from his coaching position at Miami Northwestern High School in Florida. The reason? Allegedly, providing “impermissible benefits”, such as Uber rideshares and free meals to his players. Let’s take a moment to consider the bigger picture and ask ourselves – Is this suspension truly justified or is it an unfortunate consequence of a well-intentioned act of kindness. In truth those rides to and from the sports field simply provided the students access and opportunity to participate in a youth sports program.

Transportation is often a critical barrier that prevents young athletes from participating in sports, especially in under resourced communities, where access to reliable transportation can be limited. School districts across the country have phased out after school and summer activity busing where funding these programs have become a challenge. For many students, the simple challenge of getting to and from practice can determine whether they can participate in extracurricular activities that are vital to personal growth and development. But some parents work or do not have access to consistent transportation to safely get their children to and from the sports field on time.

Bridgewater, having experienced the transformative power of sports in his own life, recognized this gap and took proactive steps to bridge it. By providing rides to his players, he wasn’t just giving them a ride, he was giving them an opportunity. The ability to attend practice consistently can significantly shape young athletes’ lives, fostering, discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills, qualities that will serve them well beyond the football field. Moreover, participation in sports is often linked to better life outcomes for youth. https://firsttee.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/First-Tee-Harris-Poll-2025.pdf Participating in sports offers a sense of belonging and an avenue for academic encouragement, and a potential path to higher education, and careers in athletics or related fields. By helping students overcome one of their biggest barriers to participation, Bridgewater was investing in their futures. Punishing him, and ostensibly the students, for such a humanitarian act, seems to disregard the substantial positive impact it has on the students’ lives. Shouldn’t our focus be on creating more inclusive opportunities for youth, rather than penalizing those who are genuinely attempting to make a difference?

While rules and regulations exist to maintain fairness, we have to consider the context and ultimate intent behind the actions, Bridgewater’s act of providing rides was not about gaining an unfair competitive advantage it was about leveling the playing field at the Florida high school. As the Florida High School Athletic Association continues its investigation, we hope that they recognize the broader implications of their decision and consider the invaluable life skills and opportunities at stake for these young athletes. After all, the goal of high school sports should be to empower and uplift our youth, not create unnecessary hurdles.

Transportation serves as a critical link in the chain of freedom, it opens doors to endless possibilities, including the pursuit of a better future through sports. The thought of an athletic governing board geofencing the life of these athletes rather than encourage access to all opportunities is heartless. We should all want to see our youth pursue a better future and if sports can be a pathway we should remove barriers not create more.

Remember, participation in sports offers youth, mental, physical and long-term life skills. These lasting benefits, both cognitive and financial, provide compelling reasons to encourage youth involvement in sports. We should prioritize solutions that support athlete participation and continue discussions on ensuring every students has (transportation) access to youth sports opportunities, paving the ultimate success. Transportation is Mobility and Mobility is Freedom ™.
