Over the next 710 days, Earth will experience three total solar eclipses visible from Europe, Africa and Australia, giving travelers an unusually accessible chance to witness one of nature’s rarest spectacles. It makes 2026 through 2028 an extraordinary period for eclipse chasers and anyone who ever wanted to experience a total eclipse of the sun.

The first event begins tomorrow, Aug. 12, when a total solar eclipse crosses eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain. It will be Europe’s first total solar eclipse since 2015, and mainland Europe’s first since 1999.

Although similar trios of total solar eclipses repeat every 18 years, few have crossed so many accessible and culturally significant destinations.

Why This Is A Golden Age

Most people consider themselves fortunate to witness a single total solar eclipse during their lifetime. Between tomorrow and July 2028, it will be possible to experience three across three continents, each offering a completely different setting — Arctic landscapes in Greenland and Iceland, ancient monuments in Egypt and the deserts and cities of Australia. Three total solar eclipses within about two years occur because three separate Saros series happen to align over a short period. Similar trios occurred between 1990 and 1992 and again from 2008 to 2010, with the next not arriving until the mid-2040s.

Remote parts of the Australian Outback will enjoy more than five minutes of totality beneath some of the clearest skies on Earth.
