As is tradition in the streaming era, it takes way, way too long for shows to air new seasons, with anywhere from 1.5 to 3 years in between them in some instances. Now, we have some news about Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 on Disney Plus, but it definitely falls into that category. And there’s an additional problem given the age of the cast.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 will not start filming until this fall. That means between filming and post-production it’s going to be a long time before the series returns. And we can estimate just how long using past data.
Season of 1 of Percy Jackson started filming in June of 2022. Filming ended in February 2023. Then, the show actually aired in December of 2023.
So, by that math, let’s say at the earliest Percy Jackson starts filming in September 2024. That would be March 2025 to finish filming, then if post-production is the same, that would be January of 2026. That is in fact over two years between seasons, barring any delays or any filming start later than September. That’s really unfortunate, and it would be nice if shows would figure out a way to stop doing this, especially for these eight episode series that are half the length of what shows used to be. Though much more FX heavy, in most instances. Still, a number of Percy Jackson episodes are barely 30 minutes long.
Percy Jackson has an additional problem, however, as this is a show that requires its young actors to at least continue to look young as the pace of the books does not race through the years terribly quickly. For instance, star Walker Scobell is currently 15, and was 13 when the show was filmed. If it’s two years between seasons he’s going to be in his 20s soon enough, as will the rest of the cast. Then you’re getting into Stranger Things weirdness territory with the ages here. It’s unclear just how many Percy Jackson books the Disney show will end up adapting but even with 3-4 they’ll start running into this.
So, it does not seem like it’s going to be any shorter than two years between seasons here. So few shows can actually do anything like 12-15 months anymore, it’s a real shame it’s become the standard. Hopefully we’ll get more exact dates soon enough here.
