Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2024) Launches In India With Subtle Upgrades

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2024) Launches In India With Subtle Upgrades

Amazon has announced the availability of its 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite in India. The new model was introduced in the U.S. in October 2024 with a $10 price bump and a few quality-of-life improvements.

The new Kindle Paperwhite features a slightly larger screen, the highest contrast ratio of any Kindle to date and faster page-turn speeds. Here’s what you need to know about the all-new Amazon Kindle device in India.

The New Kindle Paperwhite Is More Intuitive Than Ever

The 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite features a 7-inch screen, up from the previous 6.8-inch display. It retains the 1,264 x 1,680 pixel resolution at 300 ppi but now offers better contrast, thanks to a new oxide thin-film transistor.

As a result, you get sharper text and better-looking images. The black levels are deeper, which improves the overall reading experience. Amazon has also upgraded the front-light system, resulting in a more visually pleasing display.

The new Kindle Paperwhite is said to offer 25% faster page-turn speeds. You’ll really notice it when you’re flipping through pages to find a quote or reread a section. In everyday use, the two standout improvements are the enhanced contrast and faster processing.

While E Ink displays are still slower than modern smartphone screens, the one on the 12th-gen Kindle Paperwhite feels snappier than before. From loading your Library to refreshing pages and navigating menus, it’s more responsive and intuitive overall.

You still get all the familiar features like adjustable warm light, a glare-free screen, IPX8 water resistance, and a wide selection of fonts and reading themes for added personalization.

It Is Slightly Bigger And Heavier

The new Kindle Paperwhite adds 0.2 inches to the display and six grams to the overall weight. It now weighs 211 grams, compared to 205g on the 11th-gen model and 182g on the 10th-gen version (which had a 6-inch screen).

The added weight isn’t a deal-breaker, as most of it is distributed toward the bottom half, so it’s still easy to hold. Plus, you get better battery life with a promised backup of up to 12 weeks on a single charge.

That said, the weight is starting to get into the territory of where it could be bothersome for previous Kindle owners, who’ll be upgrading to a bigger model because there’s no base Kindle model currently available in India.

The power button remains at the bottom, next to the USB-C port. While some people might prefer a top-mounted button, I haven’t accidentally pressed it even once, despite holding the device with my pinky resting at the bottom.

No Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition For India

Like the previous generation, this Kindle Paperwhite also has a Signature Edition, but Amazon isn’t launching it in India. That means you miss out on features like auto-brightness, wireless charging, and 32GB of storage.

The model launching in India comes with 16GB of storage, of which around 12GB is free to use. That’s plenty for most users and shouldn’t be an issue.

However, I wish the base Paperwhite included auto-brightness functionality. It’s a useful quality-of-life feature. For instance, when you move from bright outdoor light to a dimly lit room, automatic adjustment would save you the hassle of adjusting brightness manually.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Price And Availability In India

The 12th-gen Amazon Kindle Paperwhite costs Rs 16,999 in India and will be available in Black color. There is no ad-supported variant, so this is essentially the $180 equivalent of the U.S. model.

Unfortunately, there are no Jade or Raspberry color models, but you can purchase covers in Black, Marine Green, and Tulip Pink at Rs 1,999 each. The new Kindle Paperwhite is now available for purchase on Amazon.in.
