The Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) was a strange addition to AMD’s line up, confined to the Chinese DIY PC market and one or two others limited to pre-built systems. However, the card is coming to other markets as we speak, being spotted in the UK recently and according to various sources including TechPowerUp, lands in the US later this month. Even better, it gets a price cut over the RX 7900 XT too.
The card will, according to Videocardz retail for just $549, which means it will be getting a sizeable $100 price cut compared its big brother, the RX 7900 XT, which has a retail price of $749. The RX 7900 GRE should firstly help plug the sizable gap between the RX 7800 XT and the RX 7900 XT, but at $549, will also be retailing close to the RTX 4070.
The latter has received a price cut that sees it readily available for less than $550, meaning the RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 Ti Super all cost significantly more. It could be a good move for AMD, which has cut the price of many of its current GPUs in the wake of Nvidia’s trio of Super card launches earlier this year – the RTX 4070 Super, 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4080 Super, with the RTX 4070 continuing to sit alongside at a reduced price.
With 16GB of memory, it has the same amount as the RX 7800 XT, but has more CUs and stream processors, but has a slightly lower boost frequency and memory speed. It’s especially a significantly cut-down RX 7900 XT at a much more attractive price point, hopefully offering excellent 1440p performance with plenty of scope as a 4K gaming graphics card too.
This is encouraging news for PC gamers as Nvidia’s RTX Super series launch has put downward pressure on pricing for both companies. We’re still looking at significantly higher pricing than a few years ago, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction.
