Disney seems to have accidentally revealed the release date of Andor season 2 through the Disney Plus app, given that there is zero fanfare for the announcement and it’s only appearing in some versions of the app.
While not on the web, the mobile version of the app seems to be saying the release date of Andor season 2 is April 22, 2025.
This is closer than many anticipated, as originally it seemed like Andor season 2 may not make it out until the second half of 2025. The end of April isn’t exactly imminent, but it’s closer than it could have been, six months away rather than a year. That will make it 2.5 years between seasons rather than 3, which of course is still an exceptionally long wait, even in the streaming era.
It is one of very few Disney Plus shows that has been confirmed to have another season coming, the other being Ahsoka after The Acolyte was cancelled. It’s unclear if this year’s Skeleton Crew will be a miniseries or something ongoing. That again may depend on viewership versus cost.
Before The Acolyte, Andor was the least-watched Disney Plus Star Wars show, and had an enormous budget, $250 million, reportedly, just for season 1. That would normally mean that the series could be cancelled, no matter how good it was, but before the show was even made, a two season deal was locked in, given that the show is meant to lead up exactly to the start of Rogue One, and it would make little sense to kill it before that happened. But still, this is a massive investment on Disney’s part. Still, even if viewership isn’t as high as they want it to be, many would agree Andor is one of only a few clear wins in the era of Disney Star Wars in terms of quality.
Of all the people on deck to get more Star Wars projects, that does not seem to include Andor creator Tony Gilroy, who also wrote the original Bourne trilogy and did Michael Clayton, earning two Oscar nominations. He does not have any future projects listed on IMDB, and it’s not clear what his next move is after this. If I were Disney, I would want to lock him up either for more Star Wars or maybe something at Marvel (I feel like he could have been a great Captain America 4 director).
As for Andor, six months. Better than a year. See you then.
