When Apple releases iOS 18.2 for iPhone, it will deliver more Apple Intelligence features and to more people. It will probably be a bigger update than the current iOS 18.1 release, with more eye-catching elements, that will transform the iPhone for many. It will see Apple Intelligence delivered beyond U.S. English users for the first time. Here’s what’s coming, exactly when, including new features that aren’t part of Apple Intelligence.
iOS 18.2: New Apple Intelligence Features
Users of iOS 18.1 have seen a range of neat improvements. For a start, there are the systemwide writing tools which let users improve their writing styles in Mail, Messages and other apps, or proofread grammar, sentence structure and more.
Siri has already become more conversational and much more informed about Apple products so you can talk to your phone to learn how to do stuff on it. And users can summarize email chains in one click.
But it’s the changes coming in iOS 18.2 which may really capture the imagination. Image Playground lets you create images from text commands, and come up with unique and original emoji, called Genmoji which can even be based on photos of you, a friend or whoever. There’s also Image Wand, which lets you use text or your own rough drawings to create images.
And Writing Tools will take a leap forward with more features such as allowing you to describe specific changes for text: Apple says you can rewrite a dinner party invite as a poem, say.
Visual Intelligence is a highly anticipated feature, working with the Camera Control on iPhone 16 to help you learn about objects or places the iPhone camera can see, such as restaurant details or translating text instantly. More will come in spring 2025, but this upgrade is arguably the biggest and most transformational ever for the iPhone.
iOS 18.2: Apple Intelligence For More Users
That upgrade is most transformational of all for those users who haven’t had the benefits of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1, that is those who use the iPhone with U.S. English. In December, all the iOS 18.1 benefits as well of those in iOS 18.2 will arrive for localized English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.K.
iOS 18.2: Other Updates
The next major update will also have a new design for Mail, upgrades to Find My, the return of the volume slider to the lock screen, changes to the Photos app and more.
iOS 18.2 Release Date
Apple has said December is the release month and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently said it would be the week of Dec. 2. Gurman is often right but I have a feeling it will be later than that. I believe it will be Monday, Dec. 9 or Tuesday, Dec. 10. More as we have it.
