We haven’t seen any individual player ratings yet. I made a few projections about potential 99-overall players, and I’m beginning to lose confidence in at least one of my picks.
Tennessee edge star James Pearce is considered the top defensive player in the nation, but the Vols are nowhere to be found in the rankings for top defensive teams. Could a defense have a 99-rated player on the edge and still not be a Top-25 defense in the game?
It’s possible, but it seems unlikely. I predicted Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter could be rated 99 overall, which isn’t too bad. The Buffs are ranked No. 8 on offense, which should have a lot to do with Shedeur Sanders at QB and Jimmy Horn at WR.
However, the Buffs’ at No. 20 has to be related to Hunter’s presence as an all-world cornerback. Is it possible Hunter is rated a 99 as a CB and an 87 as a WR? That would seem fair. The Bulldogs’ top-rated player will probably be their QB, Carson Beck, and he could also be the highest-rated QB in the game.
Many mock drafts have him as the first signal-caller off the board, suggesting he’ll be rated no lower than a 94. That said, the Bulldogs are the best college football team in the country on paper, and their excellence goes deeper than the QB.
Expect safety Malaki Starks, defensive lineman Mykel Williams, and perhaps guard Earnest Williams to all have overall ratings of 90 or above. While Madden ratings are always a major topic of conversation, the player numbers for College Football could be even more of a lightning rod.
