Apple’s next iPhone software, iOS 27, is promised for this month, July 2026. Apple hasn’t specified exactly when, but there are clues. Here’s what to expect and when, plus whether it’s worth downloading as soon as possible or waiting for the general release.
The Path To The September General Release
Let’s work backwards: the general release will come in September, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro — read this for the expected timeline for hardware, software and reviews.
So, you could wait for that, and in terms of the iPhone you use every day, you should. Apple stresses that until then, this is beta software and problems can arise. It’s likely that there will be glitches, such as apps that haven’t been updated to work smoothly with the new beta software, or battery life that’s not always reliable, for instance.
But if you have a second iPhone, and it’s an iPhone 11 or more recent, including iPhone SE second- and third-generation, then you can download and install iOS 27. Basically, if your iPhone can run iOS 26, it can handle iOS 27 — though Apple Intelligence is only available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and later.
Apple’s Historical Beta Timeline
Apple iOS 27 has already hit its second developer beta. Read this for how to download the developer beta (with the same caveats about not using your main driver). You can also read the full iOS 27 schedule here. The third developer beta expected soon. Historically, the first public beta is based on that third dev beta and lands about a week after it. However, that’s not what happened last year.
In 2025, perhaps because of the complexity of the new Liquid Glass design, Apple chose to hold the public beta until after the fourth developer beta. This was an anomaly — unless it happens again this time.
It meant that the public beta for iOS 26 landed on Thursday, July 24. As such, that’s likely to be the absolute latest approximate date for this year.
However, the initial developer betas seem to be solid and working well, so I think it’s much more likely that the public beta will come after the third developer beta.
Predicting The July 2026 Release Date
In 2025, that third beta landed on July 7, in line with previous years (it was July 8 in 2024, July 5 in 2023 and July 6 in 2022, for instance). You have to go back to 2021 for a later release, and that was in a year when Covid was still causing issues worldwide.
Each time, the public beta launched between five and seven days later. Last year, the fourth dev beta landed on July 22, with the public beta just two days later on July 24.
I believe this year’s public beta will follow the third developer beta. That beta will likely land on Tuesday, July 7 or Wednesday, July 8. This, in turn, means the public beta will probably go live on or around Tuesday, July 14, ready to be downloaded to your iPhone.
Until then, iOS 26 releases continue in tandem, with an unprecedented release for iOS 26.5.2 just out.
