Ever since OpenAI released ChatGPT almost two years ago, touching off a global AI frenzy, businesses large and small have been aiming to remake their operations in the image of generative AI.
Sixty-five percent of organizations say they’re now using AI in at least one business function, up from a third last year, according to a May report from consulting giant McKinsey. Businesses are also seeing meaningful cost reductions in HR and supply chain operations because of new AI tools, the report said.
Figuring out this new terrain is just one task for the modern Chief Information Officer, the person overseeing the technological direction of a company in whatever form that may take. Five years ago, Forbes began honoring the best and brightest in the field with our CIO Next list. Half a decade later, the job is even more expansive.

The CIO has become the chameleon of the corporate C-suite: They can make sure customers have their privacy protected or their data secure. They can decide what new tools get deployed internally for global workforces. They can make sure cyberthreats are squashed. They can chart new digital strategies in a fast-changing environment. The job is so amorphous that the CIO title isn’t even a requirement to be considered for this list. In the past, we’ve honored Chief Technology Officers, Chief B2B Officers, Chief Digital Officers, Chief Information Security Officers and more.
Forbes is seeking innovators in the role who have made big impacts at their companies. Past honorees include Lori Beer, global CIO of JPMorgan Chase, who helped move the retail bank’s consumer products on to a single platform. Then there’s Myra Davis, Chief Information Innovation Officer at the Texas Children’s Hospital, who created the hospital’s Innovation Hub, a team dedicated to developing new technology and projects. Lastly, there’s Mira Murati, who was up until recently the high-profile CTO of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, before abruptly departing last month.
