Former WBC Super Featherweight champion Oscar Valdez has a rematch set with Emmanuel Navarrete on Saturday, December 7, for the WBO title, and depending on who you listen to, the former has a ton on the line.
Valdez’s career highlights include his 2016 WBO Featherweight title win and his Fight of the Year performance against Miguel Berchelt in 2021. Resilience has always been one of his calling cards, and he will need to put his super powers to work in the rematch with his countryman.
Former world champion Chris Algieri spoke on ProBox TV about the upcoming rematch. Algieri was asked if he thought Valdez was in a “win or retire” situation.
“I feel like that’s an overused cliché, but in this case, it actually stands,” Algieri said. “Listen, you said, there is a lot of questions about these guys in their last two fights. There was no question about their last fight, Navarrete won.”
When Navarrete met Valdez in August 2023, the former scored a clear unanimous decision victory. Navarrete’s pressure and activity allowed him to outwork Valdez en route to the decision victory.
Navarrete’s victory over Valdez in their first meeting marked his first successful defense of the belt he won in February 2023.
The fight was billed as a Mexican war between two proud fighters from the boxing-rich country, but the first meeting was lopsided in Navarrete’s favor. Considering the lack of competitiveness in the fight, the rematch seems to be coming on sooner than some might expect.
In any case, the thought seems to be that Valdez is in a “must-win” situation.
“I think if Valdez was to lose another Mexican-Mexican matchup, I think it would be a real blow to him and his career, and what he’s done in this sport. Listen, his career is stellar. He’s a commentator now as well, so there is life after boxing. He’s only 32, but based on his miles, he’s an old 32.”

Valdez is coming off a TKO victory over Liam Wilson in March. That fight felt more like a get-right matchup for Valdez, perhaps eyeing the rematch with Navarrete all along. He will need to have fixed his issues with Navarrete by Saturday to earn the win.
The Valdez-Navarrete matchup will be the main event of a strong ESPN/Top Rank card that also features Rafael Espinoza defending his WBO featherweight title against Robeisy Ramirez.
