Fortnite is back doing some old school seasonal transitions. This time, ahead of Chapter 5, season 2, a giant Titan hand has emerged from the earth holding a huge, chained box that may or may not have to do with a certain doom-bringing Greek myth.
Yes, it’s Pandora’s Box, and players have been tasked with shooting its chains to chip down its trillions of health. The chains are slowly breaking, and it’s a community effort that will unlock a new step for Fortnite’s upcoming Greek mythology season.
As of early this morning, about 60% of the health bar had been chipped through after 15 hours or so, and that’s out of trillions of HP so that the entire Fortnite community won’t immediately burn it down, as that HP pool is shared across the entire player population. I am reminded of a few times this happened in the past with Fortnite shared “shoot/mine the thing with lots of health” events.
Where this is going is probably uh, somewhere not great, given that you know, it’s Pandora’s Box and not a whole lot of great things happened when that was opened. If you are a somewhat young Fortnite player and don’t know the tale, here’s a refresher:
“Pandora’s box is an artifact in Greek mythology connected with the myth of Pandora in Hesiod’s c. 700 B.C. poem Works and Days. Hesiod related that curiosity led her to open a container left in the care of her husband, thus releasing curses upon mankind.”
“The container mentioned in the original account was actually a large storage jar, but the word was later mistranslated. In modern times an idiom has grown from the story meaning “Any source of great and unexpected troubles”, or alternatively “A present which seems valuable but which in reality is a curse.”
Well okay, I just learned that Pandora’s Box was actually Pandora’s Jar, and we all have just been running with a mistranslation. But a giant hand holding a jar may have been more confusing for all involved.
We already think we know a good about what’s coming in the Greek mythology season, including a bunch of Greek gods or myths like Cerberus. Many will populated the battle pass but others will be in the store, no doubt.
Fortnite Chapter 5, season 2 will release on March 8, 2024, and we don’t really have to worry about the box not getting opened before then because at this rate, it will probably be done later today. It’s not clear if this is the last stage or if we’re about to start fighting a whole lot of curses. Or maybe a giant Titan face pops through the map next. Oh wait, had this thing been holding up the map this entire time?
